PHILANTHROPY SOUTHWEST PROVIDES A FORUM FOR GRANTMAKING FOUNDATIONS, WHICH ENCOURAGES THE EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE ADMINISTRATION OF GIVING PROGRAMS AS WELL AS TRENDS AND NEEDS IN THE SOUTHWEST REGION. SPECIFICALLY, THE ORGANIZATION SPONSORS EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCES, SEMINARS, AND WORKSHOPS THROUGH ITS SEVEN STATE MEMBERSHIP REGION, DISTRIBUTES A NEWSLETTER AND PROVIDES OTHER PUBLICATIONS PROMOTING WISE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES TO ENHANCE FOUNDATIONS' ABILITY TO FULFILL THEIR PHILANTHROPIC MISSION.
PROVIDE A FORUM FOR GRANTMAKING FOUNDATIONS AND THE EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION ON GIVING PROGRAMS.
ANNUAL CONFERENCE : THERE WERE 354 INDIVIDUALS REGISTERED FOR THE 71ST ANNUAL CONFERENCE, INCLUDING NON-MEMBER AND SPOUSE/GUEST REGISTRANTS. THE CONFERENCE INCLUDED FOUR PLENARY SESSIONS WHICH INCLUDED COL. MICHAEL E. FOSSUM, KRISTEN LEWIS, ADRIAN BORDONE, AND STEPHEN KLINEBERG. IN ADDITION TO A 70TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION, THERE WERE SIX INTERACTIVE OFFSITE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AND AN ARRAY OF BREAKOUT SESSIONS ON TOPICS INCLUDING THE ECONOMY, ADVOCACY, EDUCATION, HUMAN/SOCIAL ISSUES, GOVERNANCE, INVESTMENTS, AND LEGISLATIVE AND REGULATORY UPDATES. THERE WERE 85 SPEAKERS ON THE FACULTY.
ONGOING MEMBER SERVICES :PHILANTHROPY SOUTHWEST IS COMMITTED TO CONNECTED, IMPACTFUL PHILANTHROPY BY PROVIDING RESPONSIVE AND TIMELY SERVICES, RESOURCES AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING TO ITS MEMBERS. TO THAT END, IT MAKES AVAILABLE AN ONLINE MEMBER DIRECTORY, PUBLISHES AN ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER, MAINTAINS ONLINE RESOURCES FOR FOUNDATIONS' USE AND CONTINUALLY UPDATES RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS AND THE PUBLIC ON ITS WEBSITE. OTHER MEMBER SERVICES INCLUDE FACILITATING CONNECTION AMONG MEMBERS AND WITH SUBJECT EXPERTS, STAFF TRAVEL TO PSW COMMITTEE AND BOARD MEETINGS, MEMBERS' EVENTS AND FOR MEMBER AFFINITY GROUP CONVENINGS (TEXAS ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTMAKERS GROUP), AND MEMBER DATABASE MANAGEMENT.
EDUCATION :PHILANTHROPY SOUTHWEST OFFERS A NUMBER OF EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS DESIGNED TO ASSIST ITS MEMBERS WITH ALL ASPECTS OF OPERATING CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS EFFICIENTLY, EFFECTIVELY AND WITHIN THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE AS WELL AS THE STATUTES OF THEIR RESPECTIVE STATES. OFFERINGS IN 2019 INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING:UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS LAW SCHOOL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS INSTITUTE: OVER 300 PEOPLE ATTENDED THIS PROGRAM LED BY NATIONAL EXPERTS FROM PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS, NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, LAW, FINANCE AND GOVERNMENTAL ENTITIES. TOPICS INCLUDED DISCUSSIONS ON TAX, LEGISLATIVE, AND GOVERNANCE ISSUES AFFECTING PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS AND NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS. OTHER SESSION TOPICS INCLUDED DATA PROTECTION, CRISIS MANAGEMENT, RISK MANAGEMENT, GRANTMAKING, INVESTMENTS, COMPLIANCE AND REPORTING. INVESTING FOR FOUNDATIONS 101 & 201:9 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE IN-PERSON EVENT WITH LEARNING OBJECTIVES THAT INCLUDED UNDERSTANDING THE FUNDAMENTALS OF STOCKS, BONDS AND OTHER INSTRUMENTS IN CAPTIAL MARKETS, IDENTIFICATION AND MANAGEMENT OF RISK RELATED TO AN INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO. WEBINARS: PSW COMPLETED 5 WEBINARS FOR MEMBERSHIP ON TOPICS RANGING FROM LEGAL MATTERS FOR COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, BOARD GOVERNANCE-BEST & EMERGING PRACTICES, LESSONS LEARNED ON DISASTER RECOVERY, DECIPHERING THE FORM 990 AND GOOD GOVERNANCE: BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE BOARD.
