SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1951, THE MISSION OF THE WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL OF DALLAS/FORT WORTH HAS BEEN TO PROVIDE RELEVANT INFORMATION ABOUT GLOBAL ISSUES, CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES WHILE ESTABLISHING NORTH TEXAS AS A CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL INTERESTS AND BUSINESS.
PROMOTING INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING THROUGH SEMINARS AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS.
PUBLIC SPEAKER PROGRAMSTHE WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL PRESENTS PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND EVENTS TO SUPPORT OUR MISSION TO EDUCATE AND ENGAGE THE LOCAL COMMUNITY IN NATIONAL AND GLOBAL AFFAIRS. IN FY 2019-20, THE COUNCIL PRESENTED 71 PROGRAMS WITH AROUND 11,627 ATTENDEES AT OUR PROGRAMS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR. NOTABLE SERIES FOR THE YEAR INCLUDED THE TEXAS CAPITAL BANK LEADERSHIP IN THE BOARDROOM SERIES,WOMEN IN INTELLIGENCE SERIES, BUSINESS UNUSUAL SERIES AND OUR ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES SERIES. OTHER SIGNIFICANT PROGRAMS FEATURED DOUGLAS BRINKLEY, DAVID BROOKS, THE PRIME MINISTER OF GEORGIA HIS EXCELLENCY MAMUKA BAKHTADZE, SENATOR TED CRUZ, JIM MATTIS, SAMANTHA POWER,NIKKI HALEY AND THE DALLAS LGBTQ GLOBAL SYMPOSIUM ON EQUALITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS. WE PARTNERED WITH DALLAS MUSEUM OF ARTS' ARTS AND LETTERS LIVE, THE CENTER FOR PRESIDENTIAL HISTORY AT SMU, THE PARISH EPISCOPAL SCHOOL, DALLAS BAPTIST UNIVERSITY, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT DALLAS AND HOCKADAY. MANY OF THESE LARGER PROGRAMS HELD AT SCHOOLS OR UNIVERSITIES ALLOWED FOR US TO HAVE LOW COSTS FOR A BLOCKBUSTER PROGRAM AND INCREASED NET PROFITS FOR THESE BLOCKBUSTERS. IN ADDITION, WE PARTNERED WITH INTERABANG BOOKS TO PRESENT FREE AND REDUCED-PRICE PROGRAMS AROUNDDALLAS. WE SPANNED THE DFW METROPLEX AND HELD 3 PROGRAMS IN FORT WORTH AND 2 IN RICHARDSON. THE COUNCIL RECOGNIZED MICHAEL RAWLINGS WITH THE 36TH ANNUAL H. NEIL MALLON AWARD.
GLOBAL YOUTH LEADERS PROGRAMOUR ROBUST GLOBAL YOUNG LEADERS PROGRAM ("GYL") PROVIDES SUPPLEMENTARY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS TO STUDENTS BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM ON TOPICS SUCH AS CIVICS, PUBLIC POLICY, INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS, AND HISTORY. ADDITIONALLY, GYL PROVIDES RESOURCES TO TEACHERS TO ENHANCE THEIR OWN CURRICULA. WE HAVE 72 JUNIOR WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL (JWAC) CLUBS ACTIVE IN LOCAL SCHOOLS (PUBLIC, PRIVATE AND CHARTER) AND OUR JWAC STUDENTS HEARD FROM 57 EXPERTS AND LEADERS DURING THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR. IN ADDITION TO SPEAKERS, WE HOST THE ACADEMICCOMPETITIONS, SEVERAL INTERNATIONAL CAREER DAYS, SIX STUDENT LEADERSHIP TRAININGS, TEACHER WORKSHOPS, SERVICE PROJECTS, DISCUSSION GROUPS AND AWARD PROGRAMS LIKE 20 UNDER 20 AND EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR. EVEN WHILE DEALING WITH CONDITIONS CREATED BY COVID-19, THE GYL PROGRAM IMPACTED MORE THAN 7,000 STUDENTS AND 650 EDUCATORS DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR.
INTERNATIONAL VISITOR PROGRAM AND PROTOCOL & DIPLOMATIC SERVICESTHE COUNCIL'S INTERNATIONAL VISITOR PROGRAM COORDINATES THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE'S PREMIER PROFESSIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM, THE INTERNATIONAL VISITOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (IVLP), AS WELL AS VARIOUS FEE FOR SERVICE EXCHANGE PROGRAMS. WORKING WITH AN EXTENSIVE TEAM OF LOCAL VOLUNTEERS, BUSINESSES AND COMMUNITY LEADERS, THE PROGRAM PLAYS A KEY ROLE IN SUPPORTING PUBLIC DIPLOMACY BY FOSTERING INTERNATIONAL CONNECTIONS FOR THE REGION. IN COORDINATION WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE, THE COUNCIL HOSTED 55 INTERNATIONAL VISITOR GROUPS FOR A TOTAL OF 487 INTERNATIONAL VISITORS REPRESENTING 128 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. WHILE IN THE NORTH TEXAS AREA, THESE INTERNATIONAL VISITORGROUPS MET WITH U.S. PROFESSIONAL COUNTERPARTS TO SHARE AND EXCHANGE IDEAS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE FIELDS.
