Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE ARC OF GREATER TARRANT COUNTY ADVOCATES ON BEHALF OF AND IN COLLABORATION WITH PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES (IDD) AND THEIR FAMILIES TO IMPROVE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE AND TO EXPAND OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE COMMUNITY.
IDD NEEDS COUNCIL OF TARRANT COUNTY THE IDD NEEDS COUNCIL OF TARRANT COUNTY, A NEWER PROGRAM UNDER THE ARC, WAS STARTED IN JANUARY 2010 TO SERVE AS A COMMUNITY COALITION OF PROVIDERS, PUBLIC OFFICIALS, FAMILIES AND SELF ADVOCATES WHO HAVE COME TOGETHER TO INCREASE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES. IT IS A COLLABORATION OF 16 PUBLIC AND PRIVATE MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS, AS WELL AS INDIVIDUALS WITH IDD AND THEIR FAMILIES. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE IDD NEEDS COUNCIL IS TO DEVELOP PLANS FOR LONG-TERM CHANGES TO SERVICES PROVIDED TO THE IDD COMMUNITY, WHILE ADDRESSING KEY ISSUES AND PROVIDING IMMEDIATE SOLUTIONS WHERE POSSIBLE. MEETINGS ARE HELD MONTHLY. IN MAY 2013, THE IDD NEEDS COUNCIL HOSTED AN INCLUSIVE FAITH- BASED COMMUNITIES SYMPOSIUM, "BETTER TOGETHER," WHICH FOCUSED ON BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AMONG PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES, THEIR FAMILIES AND THE FAITH COMMUNITY. A GRANT FROM THE TEXAS COUNCIL FOR DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES PROVIDED 75% OF THE SUPPORT FOR THIS SYMPOSIUM.
INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT THE ARC PROVIDES AN ARRAY OF SUPPORT TO HELP SELF-ADVOCATES OBTAIN THE RIGHTS, BENEFITS AND PROTECTIONS THEY NEED TO DEVELOP TO THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL AND TO ACHIEVE THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE QUALITY OF LIFE AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION. PROGRAM COMPONENTS INCLUDE A COMPUTER LAB, WEEKLY CLASSES (ABOUT 10-15 SELF-ADVOCATES PER CLASS), SPEAKERS, EXERCISE, FIELD TRIPS, A MONTHLY DANCE (AVERAGE ATTENDANCE IS ABOUT 300 SELF-ADVOCATES), MONTHLY UNITED ADVOCATES MEETINGS (AN ADVOCACY GROUP MANAGED BY SELF-ADVOCATES - APPROXIMATELY 25 SELF-ADVOCATES PARTICIPATE), ANNUAL TEXAS ADVOCATES CONFERENCE, AND A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER.
FAMILY AND CAREGIVER SUPPORT THE ARC IS A RESOURCE TO FAMILIES AND CAREGIVERS OF INDIVIDUALS WITH IDD. PROGRAM COMPONENTS INCLUDE MONTHLY PARENT SUPPORT GROUPS (ENGLISH AND SPANISH - ABOUT 50 PARENTS TOTAL PER MONTH), INFORMATION AND REFERRAL, A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER AND AN ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES (ATTENDANCE IS OVER 400).
