Organizations Filed Purposes: Innocence Project of Texas (IPTX) is a nonprofit human service organization that provides legal and investigative assistance to low-income Texas citizens who were convicted of crimes they did not commit.

Casework - Recent studies show at least 6% of the prison population is innocent which means at least 8,338 people currently incarcerated in Texas should be freed. Innocence Project of Texas investigates and litigates on behalf of innocent inmates. IPTX receives over 150 pieces of mail per week requesting help or providing case information. Staff attorneys, board members, other pro-bono lawyers, and law students at Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University help investigate and review cases. In Dallas County alone, over 100 cases were reviewed during the year. This involved gathering and reading thousands of pages of all court records, police reports, investigative reports, and lab tests. Attorneys met with clients, related parties, and prosecutors. The ultimate goal is exoneration and freedom, but getting an innocent person out of prison on bond is considered a win.

Outreach & Education - This program cultivates awareness of the number and causes of wrongful convictions in Texas and of the challenges in the justice system to free just one individual. Outreach & Education Director Anna Vasquez spoke to audiences nationwide including universities, high schools, civic and social groups, and other innocence organizations. When speaking to students, 80% are working to become attorneys, 5% are seeking degrees in psychology, and 15% are pursuing careers or continuing education in forensics and law enforcement. Ms. Vasquez spoke to over 30 organizations in 2019 throughout Texas and assisted other groups throughout the U.S. She participated in podcasts and was included in panel Q&As. In addition, IPTX met with state representatives throughout the year to discuss how new legislation can help prevent wrongful convictions.
