FIGHTING THE AIDS KILLER TAKES MAASAI LEADERS MILES ACROSS THE MAASAI MARA ON MOTOR BIKES AND SAFARI VEHICLES TO TEACH THE MESSAGE THAT THE AIDS VIRUS MULTIPLIES EXPONENTIALLY AND CALLS FOR INFORMED CHOICES. KEY TO THE TRAINING IS THE IMPORTANCE OF ABSTINENCE BEFORE MARRIAGE AND FAITHFULNESS IN MARRIAGE TO ONE WIFE. THE WORK CONTINUES TO EXPAND ACROSS THE MAASAI MARA AND ALONG THE BORDER OF TANZINIA WITH 22 CORE MAASAI LEADERS AND OVER 80 MORE LEADERS IN TRAINING, LEADING WEEKLY SESSIONS. SHIELDS FOR LIFE IS A PACKAGED HYGIENE KIT PATTERNED AFTER DAYS FOR GIRLS' NON-PROFIT. THIS KIT IS GIVEN TO YOUNG GIRLS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA ALONG WITH A HEALTH AND HYGIENE SESSION. IN THE SESSIONS, TEEN AGE GIRLS LEARN WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THEIR YOUNG BODIES AS THEY MATURE AND HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR MONTHLY CYCLE. THE GIRLS LEARN ABOUT THEIR VULNERABILITY TO TEENAGE PREGNANCY AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES (STD). PARTNERS IN AMERICA SEW AND DONATE APPROXIMATELY 200 KITS WHICH ARE DELIVERED DURING HIHIA'S ANNUAL OVERSITE TRIP. OTHERS, AS NEEDED, ARE PURCHASED BY HIHIA TO FULFILL THE ANNUAL REQUESTS FROM AFRICAN GROUPS. THE AMERICAN DONATED KITS ARE DELIVERED, COMPLETE WITH THE TRAINING SESSIONS, DURING ANNUAL OVERSIGHT VISIT. THE PROGRAM IS PROVING EFFECTIVE IN KEEPING THE GIRLS IN SCHOOL WHERE THEY RECEIVE A FREE MEAL A DAY. BY STAYING IN SCHOOL AS THEY MATURE AND GROW OLDER, THEY CAN MAKE SAFER DECISIONS CONCERNING SEX AND THEIR FUTURE. THEIR SCHOOL EDUCATION ENABLES THEM TO SECURE BETTER JOBS AND MAKE SUCCESSFUL DECISIONS FOR THEIR LIVES. THIS YEAR HIHIA TOOK OVER 250 KITS AND TRAINED OVER 250 YOUNG WOMEN. WORKING DILIGENTLY TO PARTNER WITH AFRICAN LOCALS TO MAKE KITS, THUS CREATING JOBS, HIHIA HAS A DESIGNATED SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMPION TO SUSTAIN THE MUCH-NEEDED SHIELDS FOR LIFE PROGRAM. THE SCHOOL PERFORMANCE OF SO MANY SUFFERS AS THEY MISS SOME LESSONS OR EVEN TESTS DURING THEIR MONTHLY PERIODS. LACK OF QUALITY EDUCATION IS A HINDRANCE TO YOUNG LADIES BEING EDUCATED AND MISSING THE OPPORTUNITY OF BREAKING THE CULTURAL POVERTY CYCLE -- WHICH IMPLIES THAT EVEN THE GENERATION AFTER THEM MIGHT ALSO STRUGGLE TO MEET THEIR BASIC NEEDS. THE SHIELDS FOR LIFE INITIATIVE PROVIDES SCHOOLGIRLS THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPLETE THEIR ACADEMIC CAREERS WITH DIGNITY, CLEANLINESS, COMFORT AND WITHOUT THE INTERVENTION OF PREDATORS DURING THEIR PERIODS.
