Throughout 2012, trustees of South Texas Medical Foundation attended meetings with elected officials, business leaders, and civic organizations throughout the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas to inform and educate regarding the required actions to expand the medical education programs of the four-year medical school at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Acquiring, maintaining, and managing land for future sites of expansions of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine including 35 acres and 0.794 acres donated in 2011 by the Development Corporation of Harlingen, Inc. and the South Texas Emergency Care Foundation, Inc., respectively. Activities in 2016 included the renegotiation of agricultural leases and application and securing of continued reduction of special use valuations to lower property taxes on land. The Foundation also continued communications with UTRGV and the School of Medicine regarding potential uses of the Foundation's land for educational, clinical, and research purposes
