Organizations Filed Purposes: The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas is the unyielding guardian and promoter of freedom, and justice for, and equality and dignity of, all people particularly for those who are still fighting to secure the full exercise of their civil rights and liberties. We continue to advocate to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States. Our staff works every day to protect marginalized people, immigrants, refugees, LGBTQ+ people, families, and vulnerable communities disproportionately harmed by our criminal legal system.

ACLU of Texas, Inc. operates under a charter granted by the American Civil Liberties Union (National Affiliate), the nation's foremost champion of individual rights - advocating & educating the public on a broad range of issues affecting individual freedom in the U.S.

Immigrant Rights - Our legislative advocates worked with the members of the TRUST coalition and immigrant rights advocates to stop more than 20 anti-immigrant bills filed in the 2019 Texas legislative session. The bills included one to repeal in-state tuition for DACA recipients and another aiming to make English the official language of Texas.

Voting Rights - In preparation for the 2020 election cycle, we lobbied county election officials across the state to mitigate the risk from the COVID-19 pandemic. We advocated for increased use of vote-by-mail, voter education around mail-in ballots, and for measures to be taken to ensure the safety and health of those who vote in person.

Smart Criminal Justice - After many years of advocacy, we finally helped secure passage of Texas House Bill 2048, which repealed the Driver Responsibility Program (DRP). Nearly 1.4 million Texans had suspended drivers licenses under the DRP. The policy often led to car searches and arrests when individuals drove with a suspended license. All Texans with a license suspended due to the DRP had their licenses reinstated, and nearly $2.5 billion in outstanding debt was wiped out. We also worked with criminal justice advocates around the state to advocate for reforms in the way cities and counties approach enforcement and prosecution of low-level, non-violent offenses. The concessions we achieved through grassroots advocacy in Dallas, Houston, and Austin will reduce incarceration rates and benefit the Black and Latino communities so often targeted by tough-on-crime policies.
