ADULT DAYCARE CENTER / COMMUNITY OUTREACH ANNAM COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION HAS EXPERIENCED EXTRAORDINARY DEVELOPMENTS, BOTH IN TERMS OF PROGRAM SERVICES AND NUMBER OF PEOPLE SERVED. HOWEVER, WE FIND THE CONTINUATION OF THE CENTER'S CROSS-CULTURAL ASSIMILATION, AND RELATED EFFORTS OF BRINGING TOGETHER THE VAST ARRAY OF ETHNICITIES WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY, TO BE THE MOST REWARDING. OUR MOST CELEBRATED EVENT OF THE YEAR WAS THE LAUNCHING OF THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL IN OCTOBER. IT WAS A TRUE CELEBRATION OF BRINGING PEOPLE FROM MORE THAN SIX LOCAL CULTURAL COMMUNITIES TOGETHER TO CONNECT, COLLABORATE, AND FOSTER FRIENDSHIPS. THIS EVENT SHOWCASED INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPATING ETHNIC COMMUNITIES, EACH WITH A FULLY DECORATED EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTING THEIR RESPECTIVE HISTORIES, LEGENDS, CULTURES, ART, AND FOLKLORES. CULTURAL ENTERTAINMENT, OUTDOOR EVENTS, AND ETHNIC FOOD SAMPLING ATTRACTED HUNDREDS OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS. NEIGHBORING BUSINESSES OFFERED THEIR PARKING LOTS FOR MUCH-NEEDED ACCOMMODATIONS. A GREAT MAJORITY OF THESE SENIORS PARTICIPATED IN FIFTEEN DIFFERENT PROGRAM SERVICES, SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF A GREATLY DIVERSIFIED POPULATION. THESE PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: ZEN TAI CHI, WELL- BALANCED MEALS, COMPUTER LAB, PHOTOGRAPHY CLASSES, A FAST-GROWING GARDEN CLUB, FIELD TRIPS, THE MUTUAL AID FUND, HAIRCUTS, BINGO, SOCIAL SERVICE REFERRALS, MONTHLY HEALTH SCREENINGS AND IMMUNIZATIONS.
COMMUNITY FOOD AND HEALTH FAIR / FOOD PANTRY IN 2019 THE CENTER HAS THE FOLLOWING FOOD PROGRAMS: NUTRITION PROGRAM: THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES LUNCHES FROM MONDAYS TO FRIDAYS TO SENIORS AND LOW-INCOME PEOPLE. FOOD FAIR PROGRAM: THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES SUPPLIES FROM THE HOUSTON FOOD BANK AND COMMUNITY GARDEN ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS EVERY WEEK. DUE TO THE PROGRAM'S MAGNITUDE, EACH FAMILY CAN ONLY RECEIVE GOODS ONCE A WEEK. EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: THIS PROGRAM HELPS OUT FAMILIES IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS SUCH AS FIRES, STORMS, MEDICAL EMERGENCIES, AND EVEN UNEMPLOYMENT. THE CENTER DISTRIBUTED 2,771,713 POUNDS FROM THE HOUSTON FOOD BANK, 243,219 LBS DONATED BY SAM'S CLUB, KROGER, TARGET AND LOCAL MARKETS, AND 24,546 LBS FROM THE COMMUNITY GARDEN.
COMPUTER LAB IN 2019, ANNAM CDC PROVIDED SENIORS AND LOW-INCOME FAMILIES WITH UPDATED TECHNOLOGICAL SKILLS. THE CLASSES COVERED BASIC TO ADVANCED LEVELS, INCLUDING COMPUTER OPERATION FROM MICROSOFT WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT AND PHOTOSHOP, AS WELL AS AUDIO AND VIDEO EDITING. THE PURPOSE OF THE COMPUTER LAB IS TO HELP THE SENIORS AND LOW-INCOME PEOPLE BECOME ACCUSTOMED TO THEIR INCREASINGLY TECHNOLOGICALLY-DRIVEN ENVIRONMENT. THERE WERE 18 SENIORS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE COMPUTER TRAINING PROGRAM. THE KIDSZONE THE MAKER SPACE: IT IS A FREE PROGRAM GIVES STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT AND EXPLORE THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ROBOTICS AND ENGINEERING. MORE THAN 100 STUDENTS SIGNED UP TO ATTEND, BUT DUE TO LIMITED SPACE AND RESOURCES, THE PROGRAM COULD ONLY ACCOMMODATE 48 STUDENTS. PARTICIPANTS WERE TAUGHT BASIC PROGRAMMING AND PARTICIPATED IN A VERY EXCITING COMPETITION.
