ASIA SOCIETY TEXAS CENTER ("ASTC") IS AN EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PROMOTING MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN ASIA AND THE UNITED STATES
PERFORMING ART AND CULTURE - THROUGH DANCE, FOOD, FILM, LITERATURE, MUSIC, AND THEATRE, ASTCS PERFORMING ARTS AND CULTURE PROGRAMS EMBRACE THE FLUIDITY BETWEEN TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY ARTS TO ENGENDER CURIOSITY, EMPATHY, AND A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF OUR COMMUNITY AND THE WORLD. MANY OF THESE ANNUAL OFFERINGS ARE PRESENTED IN COLLABORATION WITH SOME OF HOUSTONS MOST PRESTIGIOUS AND DIVERSE CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS LIKE MILLER OUTDOOR THEATRE, AARP, INPRINT, OCA OF GREATER HOUSTON, HOUSTON CINEMA ARTS FESTIVAL, THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS HOUSTON AND MORE.
UNDER THE BUSINESS AND POLICY PILLAR, ASTC CONNECTS HOUSTONIANS WITH BUSINESS AND THOUGHT LEADERS, AUTHORS, SCHOLARS, DIPLOMATS, AND POLICY EXPERTS TO ADDRESS A BROAD RANGE OF PUBLIC AND SOCIAL ISSUES RELATING TO ASIA AND THE U.S. THE BUSINESS AND POLICY PILLAR IN FY19-20, PRESENTED 20 IN-PERSON EVENTS, AND 3 PARTNERED EVENTS FOR MORE THAN 3,200 ATTENDEES. FURTHERMORE, DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, WHICH REQUIRED THE ORGANIZATION TO PIVOT TO ONLINE PROGRAMMING, THE BUSINESS AND POLICY PILLAR HOSTED AN ADDITIONAL 13 PROGRAMS FROM APRIL 2020 - JUNE 2020 WITH AN ONLINE AUDIENCE RECEIVING OVER 15,000 VIRTUAL VIEWS. THE PROGRAMS CENTERED AROUND CURRENT U.S. FOREIGN POLICY AND RELATIONS WITH KEY COUNTRIES IN ASIA, UPDATES ON ENERGY AND NEW INNOVATION, PERSONAL STORIES ON LEADERSHIP AND SUCCESS, AND A SERIES ON THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC COVERING ISSUES WITHIN THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM, MISINFORMATION IN THE MEDIA, RACISM, ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL IMPACT, EDUCATION AND MORE. NOTABLE SPEAKERS INCLUDED FORMER PEPSICO CHAIRMAN AND CEO INDRA NOOYI, JOURNALIST ANN CURRY, ECONOMIST WEIJIAN SHAN, CHEF NAJMIEH BATMANGLIJ, CEO AND PRESIDENT OF HOUSTON METHODIST DR. ASTCS EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS OFFER UNIQUE LEARNING EXPERIENCES FOR CHILDREN, ADULTS, AND FAMILIES TO EXPLORE DIVERSE ASIAN CULTURES. E & O ALSO PROVIDES PLATFORMS FOR VIBRANT ASIAN AMERICAN COMMUNITIES TO CELEBRATE AND SHARE THEIR CULTURE THROUGH A NUMBER OF INITIATIVES. OUR TEKS-ALIGNED SCHOOL FIELD TRIP PROGRAM, EXPLOREASIA CULTURE CAMPS, FAMILY DAYS, ADULT LEARNING CLASSES, AND THE YOUNG LEADERS INSTITUTE ALL PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SPARK CURIOSITY, BUILD CULTURAL EMPATHY, AND DEVELOP GLOBAL COMPETENCY.
