TO END FAMILY VIOLENCE BY ADVOCATING FOR THE SAFETY AND SELF-DETERMINATION OF VICTIMS, PROMOTING ACCCOUNTABILITY FOR ABUSERS, AND FOSTERING A COORDINATED COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO ABUSE.
LEGAL ADVOCACY PROGRAM (LAP)2019 ACCOMPLISHMENTSAVDA'S LEGAL ADVOCACY PROGRAM CONTINUES TO BE THE PRIMARY SOURCE OF FREE LEGAL REPRESENTATION FOR LOW AND MODERATE-INCOME DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS. WE CURRENTLY SERVE FAMILIES IN SIX COUNTIES WHICH INCLUDE HARRIS AND FORT BEND COUNTIES. IN NOVEMBER 2019, WE EXPANDED OUR REACH WITH A NEW AVDA- RURAL OFFICE WHICH SERVES AUSTIN, GRIMES, WALLER, AND WASHINGTON COUNTIES. AVDA'S LEGAL TEAM SERVED 1,510 SURVIVORS THROUGH THE LEGAL PROCESS AND HELPED 96% OF LEGAL CLIENTS FEEL SAFER BECAUSE OF AVDA SERVICES. OUR ATTORNEYS REPRESENTED CLIENTS IN VARYING LAWSUITS SUCH AS DIVORCES, SUITS AFFECTING THE PARENT CHILD RELATIONSHIPS, ADOPTIONS (WHERE A FATALITY TO PARENT IS DUE TO DOMESTIC ABUSE) AND IN OBTAINING CIVIL PROTECTIVE ORDERS. THROUGH THEIR LEGAL REPRESENTATION, AVDA'S ATTORNEYS ACHIEVED FINANCIAL AWARDS OF 3.1 MILLION DOLLARS IN CHILD SUPPORT, SPOUSAL MAINTENANCE AND PROPERTY DIVISION ON BEHALF OF THEIR CLIENTS. ITS NINE ATTORNEY/PARALEGAL TEAMS PROVIDED HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL REPRESENTATION FOR VICTIMS IN MATTERS OF FAMILY LAW, IN ADDITION TO HOLISTIC SERVICES TO INCREASE SAFETY AND SELF-SUFFICIENCY. CAMP CAREFREE WAS OFFERED TO AVDA CLIENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN TO ENJOY AT CAMP ARANZAZU IN ROCKPORT, TEXAS. IN ADDITION TO LEGAL REPRESENTATION WITH POSITIVE COURT OUTCOMES, MANY CLIENTS RECEIVED EMERGENCY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AND ADDITIONAL SUPPORTIVE SERVICES AND REFERRALS TO A COLLABORATION OF AGENCIES COMMITTED TO HELPING SURVIVORS.
FAMILY VIOLENCE PROGRAM (FVP)2019 ACCOMPLISHMENTSAVDA'S FAMILY VIOLENCE PROGRAM CONSISTS OF FIVE HIGHLY TRAINED, BILINGUAL AND EMPATHIC CLIENT ADVOCATES WHO PROVIDE A LITANY OF SUPPORTIVE SERVICES FOR VICTIMS OF FAMILY VIOLENCE. AS FIRST RESPONDERS TO THOSE SEEKING ASSISTANCE, THEY FIELDED 5,115 CALLS FROM INDIVIDUALS SEEKING SERVICES FOR THEMSELVES AND FOR THEIR CHILDREN BY PROVIDING SAFETY PLANNING, REFERRAL, ASSISTANCE WITH CRIME VICTIMS COMPENSATION AND MORE. ADVOCATES MEET CLIENTS BOTH AT THE AVDA OFFICE AND ACROSS THE COMMUNITY, INCLUDING HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT'S FAMILY VIOLENCE UNITS AND THE HOUSTON AREA WOMEN'S CENTER. IN ADDITION TO LEGAL INTAKE AND OTHER SUPPORTIVE SERVICES, THEY OFFERED EMERGENCY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AND ASSISTANCE WITH NAVIGATING THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE.
BATTERING INTERVENTION AND PREVENTION PROGRAM (BIPP)2019 ACCOMPLISHMENTSAVDA'S BATTERING INTERVENTION AND PREVENTION PROGRAM (BIPP) CONTINUES TO BE THE LARGEST IN TEXAS, AND IS THE LEADER IN BIPP IN THE GREATER HOUSTON AREA, PROVIDING 19 WEEKLY PSYCHO-EDUCATIONAL GROUPS FOR ABUSERS (MEN (IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH) AND WOMEN), MOST OF THEM COURT MANDATED FOR HAVING COMMITTED FAMILY VIOLENCE. THAT NUMBER INCLUDES THE ADDITION IN 2019 OF A GROUP SPECIFICALLY FOR GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER MEN. IN 2019, 983 ABUSERS RECEIVED INTERVENTION COUNSELING THROUGH BIPP IN HARRIS, GALVESTON AND MONTGOMERY COUNTIES. BIPP ALSO PROVIDED TRAINING TO HARRIS COUNTY'S PROBATION DEPARTMENT AND OTHERS, INCLUDING PREVENTION TRAINING TO THE HOUSTON TEXANS' ROOKIE TEAM FOR A FOURTH YEAR IN A ROW. THE MAJORITY OF AVDA'S BIPP FACILITATORS ARE LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS OR LICENSED PSYCHOLOGISTS.
