Organizations Filed Purposes:
Our mission is to provide essential and next-step services to restore hope and help end homelessness in Houston.
The Beacon of Downtown Houston, formerly known as Cathedral Health & Outreach Ministries (CHOM), provides social and health services to poor and homeless men, women, children and youth living in the Houston area.
The Beacon Day Center offers hot meals, private showers and lavatory facilities, laundry services, case management, and pastoral outreach and care to Houston's homeless community. These services are offered Thursday through Monday, including weekends when other homeless service providers tend to be closed. The Day Center also provides intake and registration for The Beacon's other programs as well as the nonprofit agencies also located in the John S. Dunn Outreach Center. Over 2,900 volunteers as well as six Day Center staff served more than 300 clients daily.
Beacon Law offers civil legal aid to Houston's homeless individuals as well as individuals at risk for homelessness. The mission of Beacon Law is to bring justice to the homeless by providing them with pro-bono legal assistance across a wide range of legal matters. This program serves as an advocate before government agencies and courts of law, helps resolve legal issues which stand in the way of employment and/or government benefits, and connects clients with the resources that exist to help the poor. Volunteer lawyers and paralegals as well as law students create opportunities for many more services to be provided to more clients than if simply operated by existing paid staff.
The Beacon provides one of the Coordinated Access centers for the Greater Houston Way Home collaborative to end homelessness. Coordinated Access provides the opportunity for homeless men and women to complete a housing assessment and get on the wait list for housing across Houston and Harris County. Housing assessments are provided Monday through Friday.
