The mission of Breakthrough Houston (BTH) is to prepare students who possess high academic potential, but limited educational resources, for competitive high school programs and college admission. In addition, we train talented college and high school students for careers in education.
Breakthrough Houston works with highly motivated, traditionally underrepresented students to achieve post-secondary success and empowers aspiring leaders to become the next generation of educators and advocates.
Breakthrough Houstons 2019-2020 Summer Program was virtual due to Covid-19. The program duration for students was 4 weeks rather than 6 and, for our teaching fellows, the normal 2-week orientation was shortened to 1 week of intense teacher orientation. 7th9th grade students from HISD schools all over Houston were served, and over 400 students attended. Classes were offered in ELA 2 times per week and in Math and Science 2 times per week. Every student chose one elective and one activity to do when not in academic classes. Projects were given to students to do at home and materials were provided if needed. Computers and hot spots were distributed to students who needed them to make sure they could do the online work. Student Profile for Summer 2020 98% students of color; 94% received free or reduced price lunch; 86% were first generation students; 57% do not speak English in the home as their primary language; 40% live in single parent households.Teaching Fellow Profile from Summer 2020 92% were teachers of color; 83% were non-education majors; 59% were first generation college students; 18% were returning teachers; 17% were STEM majors.
BTH's year-round College Bound Program continues support for 9-12th graders. This program provides resources, training, and support for BTH high school students to ensure they are prepared for admittance into competitive colleges and universities. Established in 2008, this program offers PSAT/ACT/SAT preparation, mentoring, and leadership development. The program also assists students with career and college counseling, support with resume-building activities and financial aid applications. 100% of the Class of 2020 was accepted into college and the data is still being gathered for the Class of 2021. Beginning in the spring of 2020, all classes and support were offered online and not in person.
BTH's School Year Program continues the academic/social progress that the 7th and 8th grade students begin in the summer. Starting in spring of 2020, classes went online in English and Math and a strong advisory curriculum focused on social-emotional issues was put into place. This continued after the Summer Program ended and the entire Program remained virtual through the 2020-21 school year. All 8th grade students received high school counseling with a BTH staff member. High school admittances are being recorded as they come in during the spring of 2021 but the hope is that 100% of the 8th grade students will be admitted to college-preparatory high schools.
