Organizations Filed Purposes: THE BUILDING CONSERVATION TRUST (BCT) WAS CREATED TO PROVIDE VITAL FUNDING FOR GRASSROOTS-DRIVEN PROJECTS THAT ACHIEVE ONE OR MORE OF FIVE KEY OBJECTIVES: RESTORE THE DEGRADED HABITATS; CREATE NEW HABITATS; ADVANCE THE SCIENCE OF COASTAL HABITAT RESTORATION AND MARINE FISHERIES CONSERVATION; FOSTER HABITAT STEWARDSHIP, AND EDUCATE COASTAL COMMUNITIES ON THE VALUE OFCONSERVATION.

THE BUILDING CONSERVATION TRUST'S COASTAL INITIATIVES INVOLVE MARINE HABITAT PROJECTS THAT FULFILL ONE OR MORE OF THE FIVE KEY OBJECTIVES STATED IN THE MISSION. ALL OBJECTIVES WERE MET IN 2019: RESTORED DEGRADED HABITATS THROUGH THE VERMILIO BAY FLOATING ISLANDS RESTORATION PROJECT; CREATEDNEW HABITATS THROUGH THE CCA CURTIS BOSTICK ARTIFICAL REEF; ADVANCED THE SCIENCE OF HABITAT RESTORATION AND CONSERVATION WITH THE HARTE RESEARCH INSTITUTE NEARSHORE REEFING STUDY; FOSTERED HABITAT STEWARDSHIP THROUGH THE LOUISIANA TAG PROGRAM; AND EDUCATED COASTAL COMMUNITIES OF THEVALUE OF CONSERVATION WITH DONATION TO THE SCIENCE TEACHER AND MARINE CONSERVATION CLUB AT LEMON BAY HIGH SCHOOL.

BCT IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER PARTNERS COMPLETED THE DAGGER ISLAND PROJECT TO ENHANCE 557 ACRES OF CONTINUOUS SEAGRASS BEDS, INTERTIDAL WETLANDS AND COASTAL ISLANDS IN THE REDFISH BAY STATE SCIENTIFIC AREA. RESTORATION AND PROTECTION OF REMNANT PORTIONS OF DAGGER ISLAND WILL PROTECT SEAGRASSES FROM WAVE ENERGY CAUSED BY WINDS AND LARGE VESSEL TRAFFIC ON THE CORPUS CHRISTI SHIP CHANNEL. THESE SEAGRASS BEDS ARE IMPORTANT FOR WATERFOWL AND FISHERIES RESOURCES, INCLUDING FINFISH, SHRIMP, BLUE CRAB AND SEA TURTLES.

BIG JACK'S REEF EXPANSION IN CALCASIEU LAKE IS THE FIRST ENHANCEMENT TO THE ORIGINAL BIG JACK'S REEF. THE EXPANSION PROJECT WILL CONSIST OF ANOTHER 6,000 TONS OF "SOFTBALL SIZED TO FOOTBALL SIZED" LIMESTONE OR RECYCLED CONCRETE SPREAD OVER 5 TO 6 ACRES ADJACENT TO THE ORIGINAL REEF. ENHANCEMENT OF THIS REEF WILL SUPPORT A VARIETY OF MARINE LIFE, INCLUDING OYSTERS, CRUSTACEANS AND SMALL BAITFISH. THESE SPECIES SERVE AS FORAGE TO SPORTFISH LIKE REDFISH, SPECKLED TROUT, FLOUNDER AND OTHERS.
