DeBusk Enrichment Center of Texas (DECATS) provides academic enrichment programs for qualified academically gifted and talented students. DECATS offers a unique opportunity for high-ability students to participate in an intensive three-week adventure of challenging and enriching coursework, nurturing the whole learner and fostering the leaders of tomorrow.
Beginning September 1, 2019, the corporation's officers and business staff prepared for the DECATS 2020 summer program at three locations in Houston. Since this was the first year to operate as a 501c3 corporation, all bank accounts, accounting technology, participant software, business relationships, etc were set-up and established during fall of 2019. Our development manager secured several grants to fund the upcoming 2020 program. 100+ mentors (instructors) were contracted to teach during the program as well as 500+ participants registered to participate. In March 2020, the COVID pandemic started and, as a result, in May 2020 the program was required by governmental closures and prudence, the program at all three locations was cancelled. PPP proceeds were secured and supporters confirmed all previously granted proceeds could be used to pay already incurred and ongoing expenses, as well as, a percentage of officer, business and mentor salaries. Participants registration fees and any tuition paid was refunded.
