Emancipation Park Conservancy's mission is to enhance Emancipation Park by preserving its integrity and enriching its heritage as a local, state, national and international landmark.
The Conservancy provides for Emancipation Park's day-to-day care. It offers programs in the Park in education, health, and wellness, and economic empowerment that are resourceful, fun, culturally relevant, informative, and offer unique opportunities to our community.
Due to the Stay Home, Work Safe order issued to Harris County on March 24, 2020, and the announcement made by Mayor Sylvester Turner (mass cancellation of large gatherings and events on city properties), the Conservancy complied by deciding to cancel all in-person activities until further notice. The Conservancy acted swiftly to adjust to the current climate by externally offering programs on virtual platforms and working collaboratively with its partners to ensure the continuity of its programming and operations. In partnership with strategic, corporate, and community partners, (EPC) offered programs in education, economic empowerment, and health and wellness, which directly correlates with its community's needs, interests, and wants.Education: Juneteenth - program activities celebrating the Juneteenth Holiday, the oldest known US celebration of the end of slavery, and commemorates June 19, 1865, the day that slaves were emancipated in Texas. The celebration empowers African descendants and engages their communities across the world by sharing about the history, traditions, heritage, and culture of African Americans and highlight the strides and impact African Americans are making toward our own economic, educational, and political advancements.Holiday In The Tre: A continuation of the rich tradition to celebrate the holidays at the Historic Emancipation Park, showcasing talent and supporting businesses in the 3rd Ward community.Emancipation Conversations Lecture Series: This is an established platform that fosters invigorating, inviting, and transformative, interactive conversations surrounding the Black Experience. The discussions feature innovative and iconic community leaders, influencers, and humanitarians across various disciplines, including the arts, literature, business, science, philanthropy, and politics. Economic Empowerment: Bridging the Gap Financial Literacy Series - provided the opportunity to coordinate and deliver various financial literacy services to the Third Ward Community. The direct service offering generated several workshops, cultivating a safe space for transformative learning through partnerships to focus on financial concerns.Health & Wellness: Get Fit in the Tre - a weekly fitness initiative to encourage participants to stay physically active. With the pivot to working remotely, not being at the park, the Conservancy loss nearly $600,000 in potential revenue associated with the cancellation of over 20 special events and programs. Potential grant funding support for programs and operations was also not realized.
Emancipation Park was designated by United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a Site of Memory associated with the Slave Route Project. In 2019, EPC received the Urban Land Institute Houston's Development of Distinction Award and Preservation Houston's Future Landmark Award.
