The mission of the Houston Area Parkinson Society is to improve the quality of life for those affected by Parkinson's disease through services, education and advocacy.
Houston Area Parkinson Society (HAPS) serves and advocates for those affected by Parkinson's disease in the Houston Metropolitan Area by providing therapeutic programs and support services, social services, and education about Parkinson's disease.
HAPS programs, offered free of charge, totaled over 70,000 service hours in 2019.Therapeutic and Enrichment Programs and Support Services: HAPS provided more than 200 speech and music therapy, exercise, water exercise, tai chi, yoga, dance, tango, singing, boxing and support groups each month with a combined attendance of nearly 2,000 hours of service each month in 2019.
Education about Parkinson's disease: The HAPS monthly newsletter, HAPS Happenings, was sent to 5,000 households and email addresses each month and the organization's annual educational conference, Summer Lecture Series and Newly Diagnosed Education Program events had a combined attendance of 860 individuals and provided nearly 5,250 hours of education.
HAPS social workers covering an eight-county region handled 400 intake and referral calls per month, made home visits to assess the needs of each family and conducted private consultations to help address those needs. They facilitated 18 specialized monthly support groups for people with Parkinson's disease (PD): general PD population; for PD patients; caregivers of PD patients; caregivers of people with PD and related dementia; those with atypical Parkinson's; and for those who have been recently diagnosed. HAPS social workers also managed ongoing care needs of individuals and families through case management, assigned emergency financial aid and arranged transportation totaling 2,820 rides for 128 clients to medical appointments, therapeutic exercise groups, and educational programs in 2019.
