Houston Audubon Society strives to advance the conservation of birds and positively impact their supporting environments through management of sanctuaries and habitats, environmental education and conservation advocacy.
SANCTUARIES & HABITAT CONSERVATION: Houston Audubon owns 17 nature sanctuaries on the Upper Texas Coast, providing 3,477 acres of piney wood forest, wetlands, coastal prairie and coastal woodlots that serve as critical habitat for over 300 species of migratory and resident birds. The sanctuaries are managed with an emphasis on habitat restoration, bird monitoring and protection, invasive species control, and providing public access to nature. In FY 2019 Houston Audubon acquired two properties in High Island to support coastal habitat restoration and spring migration operations. In addition, over 1,200 feet of new boardwalks were constructed at Boy Scout Woods and Damuth sanctuaries. Staff and volunteers at Houston Audubon's Natives Nursery in west Houston provided bird-friendly plants and planting consultation for 664 acres of habitat including 19 area schools during the year.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION & OUTREACH: Houston Audubon provided 613 unique nature-based science programs in FY 2019 to over 34,000 children and adults, both on site at its two urban sanctuaries and through outreach to schools, senior facilities, community centers and other venues, and via the web. Houston Audubon programming encompassed speaker events, birding classes, nature camps and tours, naturalist-led field trips, bird watch events, and citizen science bird surveys conducted at 13 locations in the greater Houston area. In FY 2019 Houston Audubon built 5 new permanent aviaries and improved trails at the newly named Houston Audubon Raptor and Education Center which opened for public visitation with scheduled hours. Houston Audubon also established the inaugural Young Professional Advisory Council to build awareness of its mission and to engage the next generation of conservationists.
