NEWS - IN 2019 HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA'S NEWS COVERAGE REFLECTED THE TOP STORIES OF OUR REGION. IN TOTAL, HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA'S 16-PERSON NEWSROOM RESEARCHED, WROTE, EDITED, AND BROADCAST 2,394 STORIES; MORE THAN 25% OF LOCAL COVERAGE HELPED PREPARE VOTERS TO HEAD TO THE POLLS TO CAST BALLOTS IN THE MAYORAL AND MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY-FIVE STORIES FOCUSED ON TRANSPORTATION, 165 ON EDUCATION, 140 ON ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES. WE PRODUCED, HOSTED, BROADCAST, AND STREAMED MAYORAL DEBATES AND CANDIDATE FORUMS. EACH WEEK HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA NEWS PRODUCED IN-DEPTH REPORTS SUCH AS ANNIVERSARY COVERAGE OF THE SHOOTING AT SANTE FE HIGH SCHOOL. EDUCATION - HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA HOSTED THE ANNUAL REGIONAL QUALIFYING ROUND FOR THE SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE COMPETITION INVOLVING 1,000 SCHOOLS AND 100,000 FAMILIES. THREE HUNDRED FIFTY HOUSTON-AREA STUDENTS AGES 5-8 PARTICIPATED IN THE LOCAL PBS WRITER'S CONTEST. TO SUPPORT THE IMPORTANCE OF STEM LEARNING FOR FUTURE POST-SECONDARY AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES, HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA CO-CREATED A VIDEO SERIES, MATH IN A FLASH, THAT TEACHES FOUNDATIONAL CONCEPTS. HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA SERVES AS HOUSTON'S LARGEST CLASSROOM BROADCASTING MORE THAN 30 HOURS A WEEK OF CURRICULUM-BASED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING.

ARTS & CULTURE - HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA SERVES AS A VITAL LINK TO HOUSTON'S ARTS AND CULTURE ORGANIZATIONS, AS EVIDENCED BY 417 STORIES FOCUSED ON THE PEOPLE, ORGANIZATIONS THAT COMPRISE OUR ARTSCOMMUNITY. HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA IS THE HOUSTON SYMPHONY'S BROADCAST HOME, MAKING 100 PERFORMANCES AVAILABLE TO ANYONE WITH A RADIO OR SMARTPHONE. HPM OPENED THE GEARY PERFORMANCE STUDIO TO 60 MUSICIAN GROUPS OF ALL GENRES AND SHOWCASED THEIR WORK ACROSS BROADCAST AND DIGITAL CHANNELS. HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA CAPTURED 52 CONCERT PERFORMANCES FROM OTHER ORGANIZATIONS FOR HOUSTON MATTERS' DAILY TALK SHOW.
