The mission of Houston Youth Symphony (HYS) is to recruit, educate, develop and nurture young musicians and provide them with the opportunity to train under professional musicians and perform in professionally conducted concerts.
Houston Youth Symphony offers classical music education for youth with approximately 630 students performing 33 concerts in the 2018/19 season.
Houston Youth Symphony's core program consists of five orchestras of various skill levels selected through a competitive audition process. With 436 members ranging in age from 7 to 19, members participated in 25 weeks of rehearsals and performed in three professionally conducted concerts at Rice University's Stude Concert Hall and two free concerts at Pershing Middle School.
The HYS Coda Music Program brings graduated, intensive string instruction to 135 students at four elementary schools in Houston ISD and two elementary schools in Fort Bend ISD. This after-school program uses classical music and group instruction to build community and social transformation through ensemble and performance opportunities. Twenty-four weeks of instruction included nineteen school and community performances.
The HYS Melody Program provides free private lesson instruction for economically disadvantaged youth in grades three through twelve at targeted schools in the Northside High feeder system and at KIPP Sharpstown and KIPP Sharp. Sixty students received 22 weeks of instruction, culminating in two year-end recitals.
