Organizations Filed Purposes:
To drive community solutions promoting mental health. Through innovative collaborations, education, and advocacy, we lead change to promote mental health and prevent mental illness in the Greater Houston region.
To enhance the mental health of all residents of the Greater Houston region and improve the lives of those with mental illness. MHA of Greater Houston accomplishes this through collaborations, education, outreach, and advocacy.
Collaboration, education, and advocacy are central to all our program components. Program components include the Center for School Behavioral Health (CSBH), the Integrated Health Care Initiative (IHCI), the Veterans Behavioral Health (VBH) program, Mental Health Literacy, and Public Policy. In 2020, we transitioned programming to virtual delivery beginning in March, in order to keep staff and clients safe in the face of COVID-19. We also adapted and enhanced program content as needed to respond to behavioral health needs brought on or exacerbated by the pandemic. In 2020, we served over 7,000 clients through our various program components. For example, we trained 2,487 educators and youth-serving personnel on children's mental health, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to identify mental health needs, respond appropriately, and link youth to services. We work with a diverse network of organizational partners, many of whom collaborate with us on common work agendas to create changes in systems and policies. Our IHCI works with over 55 partners including health care providers, insurers, and universities to advance integrated health care (coordinating mental health care with other health care), which is considered best practice. Our CSBH works with over 80 school districts and child-serving organizations to improve the prevention, early identification and intervention, and treatment of mental illness among schoolchildren. Our VBH program partners with Veterans Treatment Court Programs and other organizations to provide support such as peer mentoring for justice-involved veterans with mental health concerns. Our Mental Health Literacy programming provides training such as Mental Health First Aid, Mental Health 101, and Self-Care to staff and clients of numerous organizations. In 2020, our Public Policy work prioritized preparation for the 87th Texas Legislative Session.
