Organizations Filed Purposes:
Newspring's primary mission is to assist in the economic development of a low income community. Our activities include a visual arts program for middle and high school students
Newspring brings professional artists, graphic designers, photographers, etc. into the schools to mentor 600 promising art students in Spring Branch. In 2018 we did this in four middle and high schools. We also conduct an annual auction of the students' best work to encourage them to stay in school. The grants figure above reflects sales of student art, 100% of which goes to the students, much of it in the form of savings for college. In 2010 Newspring opened an art studio where low income students can work after school and in the summer. In 2018 Newspring continued the butterfly project. The primary purpose of the project was to raise money for college scholarships for kids who can't otherwise afford college. The butterfly project provided an opportunity for our students to engage in community art in a way few kids their age ever can do. By participating in the butterfly project, not only do students learn from the experience and but they also take pride in beautification of the community in which they live. In 2018 Newspring awarded $22,393 in college scholarships to our alumni now in college, this is also included in the grants figured above. In 2018 Newspring had 45 Spring Branch students participate in the student art sales.
Newspring conducts an annual business plan competition for the Spring Branch campus of Houston Community College. We provide two advisers per student and also offer training for developing a business plan. Winners receive seed capital raised by the community college. Newspring continues to support new business startups in Spring Branch after the completion of the competition. In 2018, Newspring held its last business plan competition and invited the contestants and advisers to participate in the EDGE program to build a business education and mentoring program for existing business that offer economic benefit to the Spring Branch community. The EDGE program holds 6 classes per year for 10 businesses in the program and provides ongoing support by providing volunteer subject matter experts and 2-3 assigned advisers per business.
