Organizations Filed Purposes:
To provide a sanctuary where modern art and the sacred meet, to cultivate contemplation and a transcendent personal experience, and to foster a reverence for human rights and social justice, in service of community and global transformation.
Central to the Rothko Chapels mission is the stewardship of the works of art by Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, and the integration of art, faith and justice for personal and community transformation.
The Rothko Chapel hosts annually more than 100,000 visitors from more than 100 countries. Visitors are drawn to the Chapel's unique sacred art created by Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, as well as for contemplation and prayer. The Rothko Chapel is the steward for the artwork, ensuring its upkeep and accessibility to the public, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The new Welcome House has taken the place of our former vestibule area, offering educational materials and media about the Chapel and its mission. The Chapel furthers its hospitality by providing a sacred place for personal and private ceremonies and services celebrating life's passages, as well as for faith community services and religious holidays. From July 2019-June 2020, there was no public access to the Chapel while the Chapel was being renovated as part of the Opening Spaces Campaign.
The Rothko Chapel's public programs provide interactive community education and space for dialogue on critical issues related to the spiritual and physical state of the human condition. Many of our programs integrate spirituality and the arts. Our interfaith dialogue programs are designed to foster interfaith and intercultural understanding which is critically important within the context of one of the most diverse cities in the United States and to cultivate peace and cooperation in the community and beyond.
The Rothko Chapel Archives act as the institutional memory of the organization and provide important insight into the Chapel's unique legacy. This growing collection preserves the organization's history and documents its ongoing impact particularly in the arenas of contemporary and sacred art, ecumenical and interfaith dialogue, and international human rights.
