PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTER PROVIDING DIVERSE CULTURAL ENTERTAINMENT AND EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES TO THE PUBLIC AT AFFORDABLE PRICES.
SPA OFFERS CULTURALLY DIVERSE PROGRAMMING RANGING FROM WORLD-RENOWNED MUSIC, DANCE, THEATER, SPEAKERS AND A VARIETY OF OTHER PERFORMANCE-BASED EVENTS THAT ENGAGE A WIDE RANGE OF AUDIENCE DEMOGRAPHICS. EVENTS ARE PRESENTED IN THE HOUSTON AREA WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE VARIETY OF PERFORMANCES AND THE INCLUSION OF INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATION THAT CELEBRATES THE DIVERSITY OF OUR COMMUNITY. PROGRAMMING IS PARTIALLY UNDERWRITTEN BY INDIVIDUALS DONORS AS WELL AS CORPORATIONS AND FOUNDATIONS TO ACHIEVE THE GOAL OF MAKING THESE WORLD-CLASS PERFORMANCES AFFORDABLE FOR ALL AUDIENCES.
SPA'S EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMMING INCLUDES A WIDE VARIETY OF EVENTS WHICH ALLOW AUDIENCES TO BE EXPOSED TO, LEARN ABOUT, AND CELEBRATE THE ARTS. THESE EVENTS ENGAGE CHILDREN AND ADULTS ALIKE. PROGRAMMING INCLUDES PRE- AND POST-PERFORMANCE ARTS TALKS WHICH ALLOW THE AUDIENCE TO ENGAGE DIRECTLY WITH VISITING ARTISTS AND ARTISTIC DIRECTORS. IN ADDITION, WE HOLD NUMEROUS MASTERCLASSES, TEACHERS WORKSHOPS AND DANCE INTENSIVES WHICH GIVE THE COMMUNITY AN OPPORTUNITY TO FURTHER ENGAGE WITH PRESENTED ARTISTS THROUGH UNIQUE, PERSONAL AND HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCES. OUR ANNUAL CITY-WIDE ART CONTEST REACHES ACROSS PUBLIC, PRIVATE, CHARTER AND HOME SCHOOLS. THE CONTEST THEME EACH YEAR IS INSPIRED BY SPA'S MAINSTAGE PERFORMANCES. THIS YEAR, THE PERFORMANCES WHICH LENT INSPIRATION WERE THE FAMILY-FRIENDLY MUSICALS THE WIZARD OF OZ AND FINDING NEVERLAND AND DANCE COMPANY PILOBOLUS' EXCITING PERFORMANCE SHADOWLAND. THIS YEAR'S THEME "IMAGINE" ENCOURAGED STUDENTS TO USE THEIR CREATIVITY TO IMAGINE NEW WORLDS AND ADVENTURES THROUGH THEIR ARTWORK. A RECORD-BREAKING 967 STUDENTS SUBMITTED ARTWORK USING A VARIETY OF MEDIA. WINNING ARTWORK WAS SHOWCASED AT SPA PERFORMANCES AND SEVERAL EXHIBITIONS AROUND THE HOUSTON AREA. IN ADDITION TO AWARDS GIVEN BY SPA, WINNERS ALSO BENEFITTED FROM A FIRST-EVER STUDENT ART SALE THAT PROVIDED EXTRA FUNDING TO PARTICIPATING STUDENTS.
EACH MAY, SOCIETY FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTS A FREE PUBLIC PERFORMANCE AT MILLER OUTDOOR THEATRE IN HOUSTON, TEXAS. THIS YEAR, SPA PRESENTED LATIN GRAMMY NOMINEES MARIACHI FLOR DE TOLOACHE, THE FIRSTAND ONLY ALL-WOMEN MARIACHI GROUP FROM NEW YORK CITY. MEMBERS OF THE GROUP HAIL FROM DIVERSE CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS SUCH AS MEXICO, PUERTO RICO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, CUBA, AUSTRALIA, COLOMBIA, GERMANY, ITALY AND THE UNITED STATES. THIS DEFINES THEIR UNIQUE FLAVOR AND SOUND WHICH IS AN EDGY, VERSATILE AND FRESH TAKE ON TRADITIONAL MEXICAN MUSIC. WHILE WORKING TO PRESERVE CENTURIES OLD TRADITIONS OF MARIACHI, THEIR MELANGE OF THE TRADITIONAL AND THE MODERN PUSHES THE BOUNDARIES OF GENRE AND BRINGS MARIACHI MUSIC TO NEW AUDIENCES. OVER 2,000 PEOPLE ENJOYED THIS FREE CONCERT.
