Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO GIVE SHORT TERM ASSISTANCE TO THOSE IN NEED AND MINISTER TO VARIOUS OTHER HUMAN NEEDS
TODAY, 38 YEARS AFTER ITS FOUNDING, WHAM CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES BY PROVIDING RELEVANT AND RESPONSIVE SUPPORT THROUGH SHORT-TERM ASSISTANCE WITH FOOD, CLOTHING, RENT, UTILITIES, ACCESS TO EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT RESOURCES, AS WELL AS DISASTER RELIEF, ALL DESIGNED TO MOVE FAMILIES FROM CRISIS TO STABILITY AND TOWARD SELF-SUFFICIENCY. THE AGENCY PROVIDES THIS SUPPORT TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH THE COLLABORATIVE EFFORT OF INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESSES, ORGANIZATIONS, CHURCHES, AND SCHOOLS. IN 2019, WHAM, ITS VOLUNTEERS, AND PARTNERS PROVIDED SERVICES TO 18,547 FAMILIES (42,480 INDIVIDUALS). WHAM'S CLIENT CHOICE PANTRY, WHICH IS PLATINUM-RATED BY THE HOUSTON FOOD BANK AND THE LARGEST IN WEST HOUSTON, SERVED 34,997 INDIVIDUALS WITH 1,563,958 POUNDS OF FOOD IN THE PAST YEAR TO CONTINUE THE FIGHT AGAINST HUNGER. IT WAS DESIGNATED AS ONE OF A FEW TRUSTED HUB AGENCIES DISTRIBUTING FOOD TO SMALLER HOUSTON FOOD BANK AGENCIES. THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES SPECIAL PROGRAMS SUCH AS HOLIDAY MEALS, TOY DISTRIBUTION, SCHOOL SUPPLIES, AND SHOWERS AND HAIRCUTS FOR THE HOMELESS INDIVIDUAL'S NEEDS.
AS PART OF OUR VISION, WHAM USES VOLUNTEERS AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF OUR DAILY ACTIVITIES. OUR VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN THE LIFE'S BLOOD OF THE AGENCY, SERVING IN ALL PROGRAMS IN THE ORGANIZATION, INCLUDING THE THRIFT STORE. THEIR SERVICE ALLOWS US TO SERVE MORE PEOPLE WITH MINIMAL OVERHEAD. IN 2019, 373 VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED 44,246 HOURS OF SERVICE VALUED AT $1,006,943. THE ORGANIZATION'S THRIFT STORE WHICH IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, SELLS GENTLY USED CLOTHING AND HOUSEHOLD GOODS DONATED BY PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY. EVERY ITEM DONATED TO THE STORE, AND EVERY PURCHASE, FUNDS SOME OF OUR OPERATING AND PROGRAM COSTS TO HELP THOSE WHO ARE STRUGGLING IN OUR COMMUNITY, REGARDLESS OF THEIR FAITH. THE STORE ALSO MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR US TO PROVIDE CLOTHING, SHOES, AND OTHER NEEDED ITEMS TO OUR CLIENTS, AND PROFESSIONAL ATTIRE THROUGH OUR EMPLOYMENT SERVICES PROGRAM. THE STORE HAD APPROXIMATELY 46,712 SALES TRANSACTIONS DURING THE YEAR FROM ITS CUSTOMERS.
DURING THE YEAR, WHAM ALSO PROVIDED MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING TO 248 INDIVIDUALS IN THE WEST HOUSTON COMMUNITY. THE ORGANIZATION INVESTS IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS AND RECOGNIZES THAT ASSISTING DISADVANTAGED INDIVIDUALS IS THEIR FIRST PRIORITY. WHAM IS COMMITTED TO PROVIDE HOPE AND HELP TO INDIVIDUALS, CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WHEN THEY NEED A HAND SORTING THROUGH CHALLENGES OF LIFE. WHAM TREATS ALL THOSE SERVED WITH COMPASSION, UNDERSTANDING AND KINDNESS. WHAM BELIEVES EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO THRIVE.
