Developing The Whole Child (Henrie Elementary - $18,000 grant): Schools and educators play a crucial role in the total development of the child. This means that we not only focus on improving students academic performances, but also contributing to their overall development and helping them be set up for long term success in all areas of life. Just like Aristotle said, habits that are formed from childhood play a crucial role in shaping a childs character that will follow them into their adult life. Therefore, our role is to develop the whole child by being intentional in helping students grow in every area. We want our students to not only have academic growth and success, but we want to empower them to be creative, confident, passionate, and engaged citizens who can strengthen the wellbeing of society. With the implementation of this grant, we will focus on four key areas that we feel will help in Developing the Whole Child and building those positive habits that will set students up for success in life.Lego My Eggos Expansion Project (Kimball Elementary - $18,000 grant): After two successful years in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competition, our school is now looking to further our reach for robotics curriculum to more students and grade levels. The Lego League sponsors and team members will use Legos and program robots using Mindstorms and WeDo programs on Dell laptops. Working through weekly advanced academic challenges, all students on our campus will work on team building exercises, robotics programming, coding, and demonstrate other core values of the FIRST LEGO League which extend far beyond the walls of the competition. Through gracious professionalism, team members will work with other teams in our area to expand their knowledge and help each other be successful. Additionally, the Lego League team members will meet three times a week in the STEM lab during the competition season and then weekly in the spring semester for Hackathon events and continuing education.Think Tank (Mackey Elementary - $18,000 grant): Think Tank is a space designed to challenge students thinking in new and creative ways. Reconfiguring the outdated function of a sit-and-click computer lab, Think Tank will serve as modern day tech hub for both an extension of classroom learning and a time of STEM-based Advanced Academics. Empowering and equipping students with the tools needed to keep up and stay ahead of the ever-evolving technology in modern society is the core principle of Think Tank. Students will enter Think Tank on a bi-weekly basis with their classmates charged with the task of solving and creating problems framed in curriculum goals and real-world applications. As an outlet for out-of-the-box thinking, students will utilize the guiding support of their teacher and campus librarian to collaborate with peers inside Think Tank. While desktop computers will be accessible as an extension for research and creation of presentations on the perimeter of the room, the primary function of Think Tank is sourced from central core of the room housing the Spheros, STEMfinitys Makerspace tools, 3-D printer and Chromebooks. Fueling creativity and fostering curiosity are pillars of Mesquite ISDs vision for the future of our students education, and with Think Tanks Spheros, STEMfinitys Makerspace tools, and 3-D printer, Think Tank will be an outlet to serve this mission.
