IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ALL IMPACTED BY APHASIA BY OVERCOMING COMMUNICATION BARRIERS AT HOME AND IN OUR COMMUNITIES.
THE APHASIA CENTER OF WEST TEXAS PROVIDES SUPPORT SERVICES TO INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES WHOSE LIVES HAVE BEEN IMPACTED BY APHASIA. WE OFFER A HOLISTIC, SOCIAL MODEL OF SERVICE MEANT TO HELP THOSE WE SERVE RE-ENGAGE IN LIFE. OUR SERVICES ARE PRIVATE PAY ONLY AND WE DO NOT ACCEPT INSURANCE OR GOVERNMENT FUNDING. WE ARE COMPLETELY PRIVATELY FUNDED THROUGH FOUNDATION SUPPORT AND FUNDRAISING EVENTS. OUR GOAL IS FOR THE PERSON WITH APHASIA TO BE IN CONTROL RATHER THAN HAVE AN OUTSIDE ENTITY DICTATE THE PERIMETERS OF CARE. OUR MODEL OF SERVICE IS THE LIFE PARTICIPATION APPROACH TO APHASIA, RECOGNIZED BY THE LEADING CLINICIANS AND RESEARCHERS IN THE FIELD OF APHASIA AS BEST PRACTICE. THOSE WE SERVE PURCHASE A MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP FOR A COMMUNICATION WORK OUT, MUCH LIKE PEOPLE GO TO A GYM FOR A PHYSICAL WORK OUT. WE EMPLOY SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS TO DESIGN AND OVERSEE EVERY ASPECT OF OUR PROGRAM. WHILE OUR FEES ARE ECONOMICAL AND MEANT TO ENABLE EVERYONE TO PARTICIPATE REGARDLESS OF INCOME LE
IN 2019, THE APHASIA CENTER DIRECTLY SERVED 173 INDIVIDUALS IMPACTED BY APHASIA AND OFFERED 7,488 PROGRAMMING HOURS IN BOTH SKILLED LIFE PARTICIPATION AND SOCIAL GROUPS. THIS WAS A UNIQUE YEAR AND THE CHALLENGES OF THE PANDEMIC MADE SERVICE DELIVERY DIFFICULT, BUT OUR DEDICATED STAFF WORKED TIRELESSLY TO ENSURE THOSE WE SERVE HAD ACCESS TO OUR SERVICES VIA ZOOM CONVERSATION GROUPS, PERSONAL PHONE CALLS, TEXTS, AND HANDWRITTEN NOTES. THE NOTES WERE ESPECIALLY BENEFICIAL TO THOSE IN ASSISTED LIVING ENVIRONMENTS WHO WERE ESPECIALLY ISOLATED. WITH STRINGENT DISINFECTION MEASURES, SCREENING TOOLS, AND PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT, WE WERE ABLE TO ONCE AGAIN OPEN OUR DOORS WITH LIMITED CAPACITY TOWARDS THE END OF THE FY. WHILE REMOTE SERVICE DELIVERY IS POSSIBLE, FOR PEOPLE WITH A COMMUNICATION CHALLENGE WHO ARE OFTEN MARGINALIZED AND ISOLATED, NOTHING CAN REPLACE THE RICH AND MEANINGFUL INTERACTION OF IN-PERSON CONVERSATION. AT THE APHASIA CENTER OF WEST TEXAS WE REMAIN COMMITTED TO IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ALL IMPACTED BY APHASIA BY OVERCOMING COMMUNICATION BARRIERS, REGARDLESS OF THE CHALLENGES THAT MAY PRESENT FROM YEAR TO YEAR.
