Unlock Ministries is a mentoring community for at-risk students to discover their value and thrive. Students from poverty are the most likely to have experienced many adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and need mentors to stop the emotional bleeding and help them heal and begin to grow again. Opportunity Camp is a proven, strategic event that forms life-long mutually beneficial relationship for the counselors, mentors and students.
At Op Camp/Transition camp, 325 students are given an amazing, sleep away from home camp experience for free! 125 counselors and 50 adult leaders were taken through Conscious Discipline training, a trauma informed care approach to mentoring kids. 50-60% of our camp counselors were former campers that returned to serve on staff. 100% of our former campers who serve on staff graduate high school compare to 66% of their peer class ( minority students from poverty).
Mentoring programs: Fun Clubs, Opportunity Groups, Mighty Men and Mighty Women.Op Groups meet on Tuesday nights for 10 weeks in the spring. 125 students led by 50 adults are mentored in small groups. Mighty Men and Mighty Women are high school students that meet all that meet all year and serve on staff Opportunity Camp and Fun Academy.
Fun Academy is a 6 week in-town literacy day camp that radically impacts students reading ability. 250 students attended this year and gained an average of 6 months of reading ability over the summer compared to their peers who lose 2-3 months of reading comprehension. This is the 5th straight year these students have done this.
