Organizations Filed Purposes:
To promote preservation, education, archaeology, & research of African Diaspora history focusing on the period of enslavement & post-slavery era in the Gulf Coast Region of Texas & its connections to other regions in the world.
Preservation, stabilization, planning & restoration of 4 National Register listed historic houses to become museum houses & one archaeology field school lab. 75% of the labor was done by skilled & unskilled volunteers. Rotted wood removed, reinforced roof rafters, joists & added support beams for 3 collapsing porches. Removed non-historic materials from inside one historic house. Salvaged historic hand-painted wall papers & wood trim from 2 historic houses. Installed temporary electric service for 2 houses.
Two historic sites owned by RBHYates Museum was awarded "Sites of Memory associated to the UNESCO-Slave Route in March. With the assistance of several paid university archaeology & history student interns, new research data was added to the original UNESCO nominations of additional properties within the National Register Historic District of Freedmen's Town & the related sites from Texas to Mexico.
Lone Star College conducted three semesters of archeology field courses on one of RBHYates historic sites. With a grant from the Texas Historical Foundation, the students were able to purchase special equipment to begin the first phase of processing & photo documentation of thousands of artifacts from the current dig units. The students also transferred thousands of unprocessed artifacts into special archive bins also pucrhased with the grant. Student field trips & public tours were held all throughout the year. Dr. Quintard Taylor presented lectures for Juneteenth programs.
