Organizations Filed Purposes: To preserve the voices of individuals with Parkinson's and related neurological disorders through intensive speech therapy, follow up support, research, education, and community awareness.

One in one hundred adults over the age of 60 will be diagnosed with Parkinsons. Of these individuals, nearly 90% will develop speech and swallowing issues. Without adequate treatment, these patients are at high risk of losing their ability to speak and to swallow. This can lead to isolation, dependence on others, feeding tubes, multiple hospitalizations, and death. Since the muscles used for speaking are also used for swallowing, speech therapy is about much more than improving ones communication skills.SPEAK OUT! & The LOUD CrowdParkinson Voice Project developed an effective treatment approach for individuals with Parkinsons that combines education, individual speech therapy (SPEAK OUT!), and ongoing group therapy (The LOUD Crowd). SPEAK OUT! consists of individual speech therapy sessions conducted by a licensed speech-language pathologist. Together, the patient and speech-language pathologist work their way through a specialized therapy workbook that consists of speech, voice, and cognitive exercises. After completing SPEAK OUT!, patients transition to a maintenance program called The LOUD Crowd. Since Parkinsons is a progressive, degenerative condition for which there is no cure, ongoing support and encouragement is crucial to helping patients maintain their speaking abilities throughout the disease process. The LOUD Crowd provides this support through speech therapy groups, a singing program, and online speech practice sessions. Parkinson Voice Project continually develops new and innovative therapy materials to improve its program and to keep it fresh and interesting for people with Parkinsons (e.g. new therapy workbooks). Speech Therapy ClinicParkinson Voice Project runs a speech therapy clinic that specializes in the treatment of motor speech disorders related to Parkinsons disease. The clinic provides SPEAK OUT! & The LOUD Crowd. Something unique about its clinic is that Parkinson Voice Project has not charged for any of its speech therapy services since 2008. The clinic is funded entirely through donations. SPEAK OUT! & LOUD Crowd Training and Grant ProgramParkinson Voice Projects vision is that every person with Parkinsons around the globe will have access to SPEAK OUT! & The LOUD Crowd. The organization developed a training program for speech-language pathologists and graduate students to learn their treatment protocol. Training is provided through in-person workshops and an online program. To accelerate its replication process and increase access to SPEAK OUT! & LOUD Crowd, Parkinson Voice Project awards grants to speech therapy clinics. In 2019, 149 grants were awarded to hospitals, universities, and outpatient speech therapy clinics. The grants provided free SPEAK OUT! & LOUD Crowd training to speech-language pathologists and graduate students, therapy workbooks and supplies, as well as funding to help these clinics support their LOUD Crowd groups.Parkinsons Lecture SeriesParkinson Voice Project hosts a Parkinsons Lecture Series whereby Parkinsons experts present on clinical, therapeutic, and motivational topics. These lectures are livestreamed and then posted online to benefit the global Parkinsons community.
