Changing Expectations is a nonprofit dedicated to providing STEM and Computer Science teaching and learning opportunities to underserved students who would not otherwise receive them.
The Computer Science for All (CSforALL:RPP) project is designed to study and increase African-American and Hispanic students with disabilities'interest, engagement, learning, knowledge, and persistence in computer science education (CS) and careers. The study will employ quasi-experimental methods to investigate the effects of activities on district CS policies and implementation. Changing Expectations will leverage its existing network of teachers in the Changing Expectations WeTeach_CS computer Science Collaborative, practitioners in Texas school districts, special educators, researchers and evaluators to form the Student with Disabilities in Computer Science Research Alliance (SWDCS)
The "My Brother's Keeper Coding Makerspace" provides hand-on digital maker coding projects and support for Black and Hispanic young men to learn Python programming, the computer language needed for cybersecurity jobs, IT fundamentals, cybersecurity and physical computing. Ninety young men have benefited from increased interest in cybersecurity opportunities in higher education, employment and entepreneuship.
The Girls Coding Club "Stem" introduces Black and Hispanic middle school girls to the fundamentals of programming through an introduction to Scratch, Alice and MIT App inventor. As each platform has a different style, the students will gain a broad understanding of various introductory programming tools. Sixty young women have benefited from increased interest in computer science learning
