MANAGEMENT OF SHEEP AND GOAT VALIDATION PROGRAM FOR TEXAS 4-H AND FFA PARTICIPANTS
THE SHEEP AND GOAT VALIDATION PROGRAM PROVIDES A FRAMEWORK UNDER WHICH THE INTENDED BENEFITS OF COMPETITIVE YOUTH LIVESTOCK PROJECTS CAN BE ACHIEVED. THE PROGRAM HELPS TO PREVENT UNETHICAL PRACTICES SUCH AS FALSE OWNERSHIP OF ANIMALS, HIRING PROFESSIONALS TO MANAGE ANIMALS, AND MISREPRESENTATION OF ANIMAL'S AGES WHILE FOSTERING FAIR COMPETITION AND LEVELING THE PLAYING FIELD AMONG THE PARTICIPANTS. THE ORGANIZATION ESTABLISHES THE VALIDATION PROGRAM GUIDELINES FOR PARTICIPATING TEXAS COUNTIES AND CONTROLS THE PROCUREMENT, DISTRIBUTION, AND COLLECTION OF VALIDATION MATERIALS. THESE MATERIALS ARE USED TO VALIDATE SHEEP AND GOATS AT COMPETITIVE LIVESTOCK EVENTS. THE 2019 VALIDATION PROGRAM PROVIDED EDUCATION, RESOURCES, AND SUPPORT FOR ALL 254 COUNTIES ACROSS THE STATE OF TEXAS. 8 MAJOR LIVESTOCK SHOWS AND THE STATE FAIR PARTICIPATED IN THE VALIDATION PROGRAM BY REQUIRING SHEEP AND GOATS TO BE VALIDATED THROUGH THE ORGANIZATION'S PROGRAM BEFORE BEING EXHIBITED. AN ESTIMATED 12,000 SHEEP AND GOAT JUNIOR EXHIBITORS PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM AND WILL BEGIN SHOWING THEIR SHEEP AND GOATS DURING THE 2020 LIVESTOCK SHOW SEASON.
THE WOOL AND MOHAIR JUDGING PROGRAM PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUTH TO DEVELOP PRACTICAL SKILLS THAT CAN BE USED IN THEIR FUTURE CAREERS. THROUGH THE PROGRAM, 4-H MEMBERS LEARN TO DETERMINE THE VARIOUS GRADES, RANKS, AND CATEGORIZATIONS OF WOOL BY ASSESSING CERTAIN CHARACTERISTICS, SUCH AS QUALITY, STAPLE LENGTH, AND CLEAN FLEECE YIELD. THESE ABILITIES ARE WELL SUITED FOR A CAREER ON A SHEEP RANCHING OPERATION, WITHIN THE WOOL INDUSTRY, OR IN THE AGRICULTURAL TEACHING FIELD. THE PROGRAM ALSO PROVIDES YOUTH AN OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE AND COMPARE THE SKILLS THEY HAVE GAINED WITH THOSE OF OTHER MEMBERS. OUTSTANDING YOUTH ARE PROVIDED RECOGNITION FOR THEIR DEDICATION AND HARD WORK. THE SHEEP AND GOAT VALIDATION OF TEXAS CAREFULLY SELECTS WOOL AND THEN PROVIDES SAMPLES OF WOOL FLEECES SO THAT PARTICIPANTS CAN PRACTICE THEIR WOOL AND MOHAIR JUDGING SKILLS. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO PROVIDES RESOURCES FOR COUNTY EXTENSION AGENTS, 4-H COACHES, AND PARENTS ON NEW RULES AND PROCESSES PERTAINING TO YOUTH WOOL AND MOHAIR JUDGING CONTESTS. IN 2019, 200 YOUTH FROM ACROSS THE STATE OF TEXAS PARTICIPATED IN THE WOOL AND MOHAIR JUDGING PROGRAM.
THE SHEEP AND GOAT VALIDATION OF TEXAS GIVES BACK TO SHEEP AND GOAT YOUTH PROJECT PARTICIPANTS BY MAKING CONTRIBUTIONS TO OTHER ORGANIZATIONS DEDICATED TO ENHANCING AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES FOR TEXAS YOUTH. THESE CONTRIBUTIONS HELP FURTHER THE DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION AND PROVIDE AWARDS AND SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS TO OUTSTANDING YOUTH PARTICIPANTS. IN 2019, THE SHEEP & GOAT VALIDATION OF TEXAS SPONSORED THE 2ND, 3RD, AND 5TH PLACE PRIZES AT THE SAN ANTONIO SKILLATHON.
