THE 10TH ANNUAL CORE4STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS) PROGRAM - THE MISSION OF THE CORE4STEM PROGRAM IS TO INSPIRE AND MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO PURSUE CAREERS IN THE STEM FIELDS. IN 2019, THE 10TH ANNUAL CORE4STEM PROGRAM HOSTED OVER 5,000 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM EIGHT INNER CITY SCHOOL DISTRICTS: SOUTHWEST, HARLANDALE, SOUTH SAN, EDGEWOOD, JUDSON, SAN ANTONIO, SOMERSET, AND SOUTHSIDE ISD. THIS EVENT CONSISTS OF A FAMILY DAY FOCUSED AROUND TEN PARTICIPATING LOCAL COLLEGE INSTITUTIONS FOR BOTH PARENTS AND STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE A COLLEGE CAMPUS, PARTICIPATE IN SOME OF THE HANDS ON BREAKOUT SESSIONS THAT WILL OCCUR DURING THE NORMAL EVENT DAYS, AND OBTAIN INFO AND RESOURCES ON FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS WHEN APPLYING TO COLLEGE. DURING THE TWO MAIN EVENT DAYS, SEPARATED BETWEEN BOYS AND GIRLS ON EITHER DAY, COMMUNITY STEM LEADERS WITHIN THEIR FIELD FROM VARIOUS CORPORATIONS, GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, AND COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES WILL PRESENT AND PROVIDE HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES AMONGST THE 59 HANDS-ON BREAKOUT SESSION. BOTH THE SAN ANTONIO HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND THE HISPANIC LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION HAVE INVESTED VALUABLE RESOURCES TO CONTINUE A SUCCESSFUL STEM INITIATIVE. THIS YEAR-LONG PROGRAM FOCUSES ON THE DUAL GOALS OF DECREASING THE TIDE OF HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL DROPOUT RATES, WHILE INCREASING EFFORTS TO EXPOSE HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS TO COLLEGE AND TECHNICAL CAREER TRAINING PROGRAMS AS WELL AS HIGHLIGHTING HIGH-PAYING STEM CAREERS AND THE LOCAL PATHWAYS TO PURSUE THOSE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES.
2019 RAISING & INSPIRING SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS (R.I.S.E.) - THE R.I.S.E. PROGRAM OFFERS A CURRICULUM THAT IS A FREE DIGITAL, EASY TO USE, BILINGUAL (ENGLISH & SPANISH) WORKBOOK WITH 60-INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES FOR USE OF PARENTS/FAMILIES/COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL KIDS. WITH R.I.S.E., BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS CAN LEARN LIFE SKILLS THAT WILL HELP THEM PREPARE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY MINDSET AND HELP THEM PREPARE FOR THE WORKFORCE. EACH CHAPTER IN THE R.I.S.E. WORKBOOK IS A SHORT LESSON SURROUNDING ONE OF 13 ENTREPRENEURIAL CONCEPTS CREATED BY A COMPANY CALLED VENTURELAB IN ENTREPRENEURIAL THINKING: PERSISTENCE AND GRIT; EMBRACING FAILURE; COURAGE; OPPORTUNITY-SEEKING; CREATIVITY; CURIOSITY; RESOURCEFULNESS; PROBLEM-SOLVING; OPTIMISM; EMPATHY; ADAPTABILITY; FINANCIAL LITERACY; AND AN OVERALL GROWTH MINDSET, OF WHICH ALL CONCEPTS ARE COUPLED WITH A HANDS-ON ACTIVITY TO COMPLETE. WITH COMPLETION OF THE WORKBOOK, OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE A DUAL GENERATIONAL IMPACT WITH MORE WELL- ROUNDED CHILDREN, AND EVEN ADULTS, WITH A CURSORY UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET AND THE SKILL SETS THAT ARE HIGHLY VALUED IN THE WORKFORCE.
