SouthwestVoter Registration Education Project To empower Latinos and other minorities by increasing their participation in the American democratic process.
SVREP hosted fundraisers in Los Angeles: Sabor De las Americas, the Willie Velasquez Benefit Dinner in San Antonio, Texas and in Los Angeles, the Latino Leadership Unity Breakfast. SVREP conducted field programs in Texas and California with field organizers in both offices. They worked on registering voters in community colleges as well as college and high school campuses. SVREP conducted 2 Latino Academy training sessions in 2019. SVREP trained Latino candidates running for office in Bryant, Texas and Los Angeles, California. Board member Andy Hernandez as well as Dr. Laura Barberena and Lydia Camarillo served as faculty for the Bryant training, Camarillo and Mario Solis Marchi conducted the Los Angeles training. SVREP sued the State of Texas on its false claim that 100,000 naturalized citizens voted illegally in the midterm elections. SVREP settled this case and called for an injunction to bar counties from expelling voters. In California, SVREP negotiated with the City of Camarillo to transform its municipalities elections from at-large to single member districts. By the end of the year, SVREP transformed 100 jurisdictions at the local and school board level. In our Redistricting case, filed in 2011 in the State of Texas, SVREP submitted a map that was accepted by San Antonio Federal Court.
