Organizations Filed Purposes:
To provide a place in perpetuity where people with disabilities can be successful, equal and capable, growing to their maximum life's potential through interaction with horses in a positive environment. We accomplish our mission by providing recreational, educational, and sport programming, including vocational/pre-vocational, opportunities to youth at-risk and persons with disabilities. Individuals are accepted without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background.
Teaching people with disabilities to ride and care for horses; utilizing volunteers to provide program, care for the horses, maintain the facility, and complete all administrative tasks; serving as an incubator for youth and adults searching for life goals.
Teaching people with disabilities to ride and care for horses and preparing them for the Top Hands Horse Show experience. A team of 20 riders participated in the Top Hands Horse Show (HLSR) earning 4 first, 8 second, 7 third, 6 fourth, 9 fifth, 11 sixth, and 7 participation awards. Families took pride in these accomplishments, relaxed, and enjoyed being part of an accepting community as well as encouraging further education with potential employment goals. The appearance of Covid-19 temporarily shut down program. With special rules and procedures in place program re-opened October 3 on a limited basis. In all 240 lessons were given this year. During the interlude improvements to current facility at 20907 Birnamwood Blvd continued. Formal approval from the FAA and HAS was received and significant strides made toward completion of the improvements. Permanent water line and the portable building were installed. Gonzales Electric installed the electricity and HICKS Lightning completed the Lightning protection. Sewer line construction was begun with completion delayed by weather.
A total of 84 volunteers gave 2,901 hours to care for our horses and provide 2020 program. This does not include administrative or fundraising work. Board members accounted for 1,060 of those hours and 13 key volunteers (includes board members) accounted for a total of 2,055 of those hours. Significant among our teenage volunteers is the fact that several came to determine what they think they will choose for their life path. One young lady has chosen to enter the military and become a physician. Two others are considering veterinary medicine. Another is considering a goal of teaching horsemanship to the disabled and someday assuming our founder's current program position. A young man with alopecia has overcome his lack of self-worth, is in all honors/ap classes in high school and still thinking about his future goals. Two of our volunteers are retired military having served in Vietnam and are mentoring the young lady choosing a military career. There are two volunteers currently considering careers in speech therapy and one of our long time volunteers will receive her masters degree and be a credentialed Speech Therapist in May 2021. She first came to us as an immigrant trying to decide her life goal, finished high school in 3 years, her bachelors degree in 3 years and began working as a speech therapy assistant. Her current life goal is to practice her trade and to provide services to our athletes who need speech therapy but cannot afford it.
The adjudicated youth program was halted in March due to Covid constraints. Six youth provided 24 volunteer hours to assist with program and facility maintenance. Our facility is in Harris County on land owned by the City of Houston and Bush Intercontinental Airport. Therefore, with Red Alert Covid designation still in effect, we have not been able to continue this program due to numbers of people allowed on the property at any one time.
