THE BOULDER OUTDOOR SURVIVAL SCHOOL IS DEDICATED TO THE INSTRUCTION AND PRESERVATION OF TRADITIONAL LIVING SKILLS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF PEOPLE THROUGH EXPERIENCES WITHIN THE NATURAL WORLD.
The Boulder Outdoor Survival School ("BOSS") is an organization that teaches outdoor survival techniques and respect for the natural habitat. Most classes take place either in rural Utah or Colorado.The School serves approximately 120-150 students per year in highly intensive multi-week training courses. BOSS teaches students essential survival skills such as navigation, fire by friction, shelter building, trapping, survival priorities, clothing,water procurement and treatment, and food gathering (plants, trapping, fishing). The organization teaches several different types of courses:1) The field course. This is a course where students are taught survival skills and then set out on their own in a controlled fashion to utilize the skills they have learned. Courses are either 7, 14, or 28 days in length.2) The skills course: The curriculum is similar to the field course (excepting that navigation is not taught), but is based out of a base camp and students do not venture off into the wilderness unsupervised.3) The hunter/gatherer course: Emphasizes the survival techniques of hunting and gathering.4) Desert Navigator course: Where students are taught navigation techniques and at the end at the course are allowed to perform wilderness routes on their own.5) Wilderness First Responder course: This course is offered in conjunction with the National Outdoor Leadership School, providing first responder training for emergency volunteers and professionals.The program enrolled and helped 120 students in 2019.
