OUR ACADEMY WAS FOUNDED IN 1966 AND CURRENTLY HAS ACTIVE AFFILIATIONS WITH 70 OF THE APPROXIMATELY 150 ACADEMIC AND COMMUNITY TRAINING CENTERS THAT TRAIN PATHOLOGY RESIDENTS IN CLINICAL PATHOLOGY. FROM ITS ORIGIN, IT HAS FOLLOWED THE MISSION STATEMENT OF BEING DEDICATED TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF TEACHING AND SCHOLARSHIP IN LABORATORY MEDICINE. WE FOLLOW THE OBJECTIVES OF THE ACADEMY. SINCE ITS INCEPTION, THIS DEDICATION HAS BEEN DRIVEN BY THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: 1. TO ENCOURAGE AND ADVANCE THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF EDUCATION IN LABORATORY MEDICINE IN MEDICAL SCHOOL AND RELATED CURRICULA. 2. TO ENCOURAGE AND PROMOTE THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF RESIDENT TRAINING AND POST-GRADUATE EDUCATION OF PHYSICIANS AND SCIENTISTS IN CLINICAL PATHOLOGY AT UNIVERSITIES AND MEDICAL SCHOOLS. 3. TO ENCOURAGE AND PROMOTE THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF SERVICE, EDUCATION AND RESEARCH IN ACADEMIC LABORATORY MEDICINE.
DURING THE YEAR THAT ENDED SEPTEMBER 30, 2019, THE ACADEMY PROVIDED SERVICES TO APPROXIMATELY 272 ACTIVE MEMBERS AND 186 ASSOCIATE MEMBERS. 268 INDIVIDUALS ATTENDED THE 2019 ACLPS ANNUAL MEETING ("LAB MEDICINE") HOSTED BY ARUP LABORATORIES AND THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY IN SALT LAKE CITY, UT. THE ANNUAL MEETING IS HELD TO DISSEMINATE AND SHARE SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL INFORMATION THAT HELPS TO ADVANCE THE ACADEMY'S CAUSE. IN 2019, ACLPS INTRODUCED A SATURDAY EDUCATIONAL REVIEW COURSE AS PART OF ITS ANNUAL MEETING. THIS 2019 SESSION FOCUSED ON MICROBIOLOGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASE. THE ACADEMY ALSO CONTINUED THE PAUL E. STRANDJORD YOUNG INVESTIGATOR GRANT PROGRAM THIS YEAR AND PROVIDED TWO RESEARCH GRANTS TO PROGRAM AWARDEES IN 2019. GRANT SUBMISSIONS WERE ALSO MANAGED THROUGH AN ONLINE SYSTEM TO FACILITATE PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION. ACLPS CONTINUED TO SUPPORT CO-SPONSORED EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS AT THE ASCP ANNUAL MEETING. ACLPS CONTINUES TO PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL REVIEW ARTICLES FOR PUBLICATION IN THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF CLINICAL PATHOLOGY (AJCP).
