Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION IS TO PRESERVE AND PROMOTE INDIVIDUAL CIVIL RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES AS GUARANTEED BY THE UNITED STATES AND UTAH CONSTITUTIONS AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS LAWS WITHIN THE STATE OF UTAH.
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH THE ACLU OF UTAH FOUNDATION DELIVERED NUMEROUS PRESENTATIONS ABOUT INDIVIDUALS RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES. PRESENTATIONS WERE MADE IN PERSON AND DIGITALLY AND FOCUSED ON THE RIGHTS OF MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES. FURTHER, WE PROVIDE WRITTEN KNOW YOUR RIGHTS MATERIALS TO INFORM THE COMMUNITY OF THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS IN A VARIETY OF SITUATIONS. WE STRIVE TO EMPOWER INDIVIDUALS THROUGH EDUCATION TO USE THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL AND LEGAL RIGHTS TO ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES. OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH WORK IN FY20 WAS LED BY A COMMUNITY OUTREACH COORDINATOR BASED IN SOUTHERN UTAH AND A VOTING RIGHTS COORDINATOR BASED IN SALT LAKE CITY. THE ACLU OF UTAH FOUNDATION PARTICIPATES IN NUMEROUS COMMUNITY EVENTS AND FESTIVALS TO SHARE INFORMATION ABOUT OUR MISSION AND TO ANSWER QUESTIONS FROM UTAHNS NEW TO OUR WORK. WE ALSO FULFILL DOZENS OF REQUESTS BY COMMUNITY MEMBERS, ORGANIZATIONS, OR SCHOOLS TO SPEAK ABOUT A SPECIFIC TOPIC. ADDITIONALLY, WE HOST EVENTS OF OUR OWN, SUCH AS THE COMMUNITY BLOCK PARTY, TO CELEBRATE OUR WORK AND RECOGNIZE YOUTH ACTIVIST SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS AND TO AWARD LOCAL CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS AND LEADERS.
LEGAL THE ACLU OF UTAH FOUNDATION RECEIVE HUNDREDS OF REQUESTS FOR LEGAL ASSISTANCE FROM INDIVIDUALS EACH YEAR THROUGH THE MAIL, PHONE, AND OVER EMAIL. WE REVIEW EACH INQUIRY AND PROVIDE A CUSTOMIZED RESPONSE. WE SELECT LEGAL CASES TO PURSUE ACCORDING TO CRITERIA THAT INCLUDE: THE NATURE OF THE COMPLAINT, THE IMPACT OF THE ISSUE BEYOND THE INDIVIDUAL COMPLAINANT, THE NOVELTY OF THE ISSUE, AND THE AVAILABILITY OF ALTERNATIVE LEGAL ASSISTANCE. IN ADDITION TO LITIGATION, WE UNDERTAKE LEGAL ADVOCACY WITH LOCAL AND STATE ELECTED OFFICIALS AND POLICYMAKERS.
PAYMENTS TO AFFILIATES THE ORGANIZATION PARTICIPATES IN A REVENUE SHARING AGREEMENT WITH AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION FOUNDATION, INC., A NATIONAL AFFILIATE. AGREEMENTS WITH THE NATIONAL AFFILIATE SPECIFY THE CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH REVENUE MUST BE SHARED. CONTRIBUTIONS MADE BY DONORS TO THE ORGANIZATION THAT ARE SUBJECT TO THE REVENUE SHARING AGREEMENT ARE REPORTED AT GROSS AMOUNTS, AND AMOUNTS REQUIRED TO BE PAID TO NATIONAL AFFILIATES ARE REPORTED AS PAYMENTS TO AFFILIATES.
