Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF OF THE ORGANIZATION IS TO ASSIST IN THE EMPOWERMENT OF SURVIVORS THROUGH: COUNSELING, A 24-HOUR CRISIS NETWORK, MEDICAL, LEGAL AND SYSTEM ADVOCACY. THE ORGANIZATION IS ALSO COMMITTED TO CHANGING ATTITUDES THAT FOSTER AND PERPETUATE VIOLENCE. THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES SERICES TO: DEAF SURVIVORS, DEAF-BLIND SURVIVORS, AND HARD-OF-HEARING SURVIVORS.

JANUARY 2019 SLCAD DIRECTOR PRESENTED A "RESTORATIVE JUSTICE" WORKSHOP TO THE UTAH ASSOCIATION OF THE DEAF BOARD OF DIRECTORS. THE GOAL IS TO EXPAND THE SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR DEAF VICTIMS IN THEIR DEAF COMMUNITIES. SLCAD DIRECTOR PROVIDED INTERPRETING WORKSHOP "BECOMING TRAUMA INFORMED INTERPRETERS". THIS SOLIDIFIED SLCAD'S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE INTERPRETER COMMUNITY. SLCAD ESTABLISHED A NEW TEEN PROGRAM "EMPOWERING DEAF TEEN SERIES". THIS PROGRAM WAS ESTABLISHED WITH THE COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS OF SLCAD AND UTAH SCHOOLS FOR THE DEAF AND BLIND'S COUNSELING DEPARTMENT. FEBRUARY 2019 SLCAD STAFF PRESENTED "WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH THIS" WORKSHOPS TO EDUCATE DEAF MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ABOUT HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS. SLCAD HOSTED ITS 9TH ANNUAL SWEETHEART CHALLENGE EVENT IN THE ST. GEORGE AREA. THIS CONTINUES TO BE A SUCCESSFUL EVENT THAT THE SOUTHERN UTAH DEAF COMMUNITY LOOK FORWARD TO EVERY YEAR. THE PURPOSE IS TO PROVIDE WAYS TO STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE DEAF COMMUNITY. SLCAD HOSTED ITS MONTHLY FACEBOOK LIVE AND FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY THE THEME WAS DATING VIOLENCE. THE LIVE VIDEO WAS SAVED ON THE SLCAD FACEBOOK PAGE SO THAT PEOPLE CAN VIEW AT A LATER TIME. THERE'S AN INCREASED NUMBER OF RESPONSE TO THIS PROGRAM. MORE QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS WERE MADE BY THE DEAF COMMUNITY. SLCAD PARTNERED WITH THE SANDERSON COMMUNITY CENTER FOR THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING TO PLAN AND HOST "LGBTQIA+ ALLY NIGHT" EVENT TO BRING TOGETHER THE DEAF AND SIGNING LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY. 85 DEAF COMMUNITY MEMBERS WERE IN ATTENDANCE. THIS EVENT SPARKED THE GROWING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SLCAD AND THE LGBTTQIA+ COMMUNITY. SLCAD CONTINUES TO BE COMMITTED TO PROVIDE A SAFE SPACE FOR THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY TO HEAL FROM THEIR TRAUMA. MARCH 2019 SLCAD STAFF PRESENTED A "TRAUMA INFORMED CARE IN THE WORKPLACE" PRESENTATION TO THE SORENSON COMMUNICATIONS STAFF. THIS IS A CORPORATION THAT PROVIDES VIDEO RELAY SERVICES, A TELEPHONE SERVICE FOR THE DEAF ACROSS THE NATION. THE GOAL OF THIS PRESENTATION WAS TO RAISE AWARENESS THAT ABUSE HAPPENS IN THE WORKPLACE AND HOW THEY CAN SUPPORT EMPLOYEES WHO ARE SURVIVORS OF ABUSE. SLCAD THERAPIST ESTABLISHED THE "DEAF TEEN HOPE HANG OUT" TO ADDRESS SUICIDE AND TRAUMA OF DEAF TEENS. BI-WEEKLY GATHERINGS TO ENCOURAGE TEENS TO FIND WAYS TO COPE WITH TRAUMA. DEAF TEENS REPORTED WANTING THIS PROGRAM TO CONTINUE. MAY 2019 THE DEAF TEEN HOPE HANGOUT HOSTED A WEEKEND RETREAT AND THE TEENS REPORTED FEELING MORE SUPPORTED AND PREPARED TO DEAL WITH THEIR TRAUMA. 14 TEENS WERE AT THIS EVENT. THEY ALL SAID THEY DIDN'T WANT THE WEEKEND TO END. JUNE 2019 SLCAD WAS AWARDED THE VOCA GRANT FOR THE FISCAL YEARS OF 2019-2021 SLCAD TRAINED THE PATHWAYS SHELTER IN TOOELE ON HOW THEY CAN SERVE DEAF VICTIMS AND MAKING SURE THEIR AGENCY IS ACCESSIBLE TO THEM. POSITIVE EVALUATIONS ON THIS WORKSHOP WERE GIVEN. (SLCAD PROVIDED 4 MORE SHELTER TRAININGS IN RURAL AREAS THIS YEAR USING THE SAME CURRICULUM AND ALL HAVE REQUESTED THIS TRAINING TO BE AN ANNUAL EVENT) SLCAD AND DOVE (A DEAF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGENCY IN COLORADO) CO-HOSTED THE BI-ANNUAL DEAF SURVIVOR RETREAT. ACTIVITIES INCLUDED: HOLISTIC HEALING TOOLS, IDENTIFYING RED FLAGS OF UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS, AND WAYS TO LIVE LIVES FREE OF VIOLENCE. SURVIVORS REPORTED WISHING THEY COULD STAY LONGER. AUGUST 2019 SLCAD HOSTED ITS ANNUAL BOARD RETREAT WHERE BOARD AND STAFF MEMBERS DISCUSSED THE FOLLOWING: TRAUMA INFORMED CARE, CREATING A NEW NAME AND LOGO, AND ESTABLISH NEW GOALS TO INCREASE ADVOCACY SERVICES. SEPTEMBER 2019 SLCAD PRESENTED "BECOMING A TRAUMA INFORMED DEAF COMMUNITY" WORKSHOP AT THE UTAH ASSOCIATION OF THE DEAF CONFERENCE (UAD). THERE ARE OVER 200 MEMBERS OF UAD. THIS WILL ENABLE THE COMMUNITY TO BE MORE TRAUMA INFORMED AND SUPPORT SURVIVORS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. OCTOBER 2019 SLCAD STAFF PRESENTED "DIGNITY WITH DIVERSITY" TO THE EDTS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS AS REQUESTED BY THE USDB PSYCHOLOGY TEAM. THE PSYCHOLOGY TEAM NOTICED A TREND OF STUDENTS BULLYING EACH OTHER BECAUSE OF THEIR DIFFERENCES SO SLCAD PROVIDED AN INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP ENTITLED "DIGNITY WITH DIVERSITY". SLCAD HOSTED ITS FIRST SUPPORT GROUP IN A NEW LOCATION, UTAH VALLEY UNIVERSITY. THIS GROUP ADDRESSED ISSUES REGARDING HOW TO REMAIN SAFE WHILE TRYING TO HEAL FROM ABUSE. ACTIVITIES SUCH AS WRITING THEIR STORIES THROUGH BOOKS, AND RELEASING/LETTING GO OF TRAUMATIC EVENTS IN THE RIVER. SLCAD HOSTED THE 6TH ANNUAL PURPLE TIE GALA FUNDRAISER WITH MELISSA YINGST, AS THE EVENT MISTRESS OF CEREMONIES. MELISSA IS A WELL-KNOWN DEAF TV PERSONALITY. SHE CREATED A VIDEO INTERVIEWING UTAH DEAF VICTIMS WHO WERE WILLING TO SHARE THEIR STORIES. THE VIDEO WAS POSTED ON THE "MELMIRA" SERIES FACEBOOK PAGE WHICH HAS 42,000 FOLLOWERS. THIS IS GOOD EXPOSURE FOR SLCAD. NOVEMBER 2019 SLCAD HOSTED ITS FIRST LGBTQIA+ FRIENDSGIVING FEAST FOR THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN REJECTED BY THEIR FAMILIES BECAUSE OF THEIR IDENTITIES. THIS IS TRAUMATIC FOR THE DEAF LGBTQIA+ SURVIVORS OF ABUSE. THIS EVENT CREATED A SAFE AND COMFORTING SPACE FOR THEM. DECEMBER 2019 SLCAD WAS AWARDED THE VAWA 2020 GRANT TO FUND TWO COUNSELOR POSITIONS, ONE IN ST. GEORGE AND ONE IN THE NORTHERN UTAH REGION. SLCAD HIRED THE NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, HOLLY PARKER JENSEN TO REPLACE STEPHANIE MATHIS WHO WAS DIRECTOR FOR 12 YEARS. SLCAD PARTICIPATED IN THE ANNUAL "SUB FOR SANTA" PROGRAM FROM SORENSON COMMUNICATIONS WHO COLLECTED GIFTS FROM THEIR EMPLOYEES TO SUPPORT THREE OF SLCAD CLIENT'S FAMILIES. FAMILIES REPORTED FEELING HAPPY WITH THE GIFTS THEY RECEIVED.
