THE MISSION OF URBAN INDIAN CENTER OF SALT LAKE IS TO PRESERVE THE HERITAGE OF AMERICAN INDIANS AND ALASKAN NATIVES AS WELL AS TO ENHANCE THE WELL BEING AND STRENGTHEN THE FUTURE OF THE PEOPLE.
HEALTHCARE SERVICES PROGRAMS - THE CENTER PROVIDES MEDICAL SERVICES AND HEALTH EDUCATION TO AMERICAN INDIANS AND ALASKA NATIVES WHO DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO SUCH SERVICES. (A) THE CENTER ASSISTS CLIENTS BY PROVIDING GENERAL HEALTH CARE SERVICES AND IMMUNIZATIONS AS WELL AS BY WORKING WITH CLIENTS IN REFERRING THEM TO COMMUNITY HEALTH CLINICS, DENTISTS, AND OPTOMETRISTS. (B) THE CENTER RUNS A DIABETES WELLNESS PROGRAM WHICH ENCOURAGES THE PREVENTION OF DIABETES AND WORKS TO IMPROVE THE ON-GOING HEALTH CARE OF CLIENTS LIVING WITH DIABETES. THE CENTER ALSO HELPS INDIVIDUALS LIVE HEALTHIER LIFESTYLES AND PROVIDES AN ASSESSMENT PROCESS TO HELP AT-RISK INDIVIDUALS DETERMINE RISK FACTORS.
URBAN INDIAN 4 IN 1 PROGRAMS - THE CENTER PROVIDES PROGRAMS AND COUNSELING TO AMERICAN INDIANS AND ALASKA NATIVES FOR YOUTH, FAMILY PRESERVATION, MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES, AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE. (A) THE CENTER SUPPORTS YOUTH PROGRAMS AIMED AT HELPING TO PRESERVE FAMILY VALUES AND TEACH SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION TO CLIENTS. THE PROGRAMS USE CULTURAL TRADITIONS ALONGSIDE CONTEMPORARY PREVENTION AND EDUCATION APPROACHES TO INSTILL SELF-AWARENESS AND SELF-RESPECT AND TO TEACH DEVELOPMENTAL SKILLS NEEDED TO SUCCEED IN LIFE. (B) THE CENTER PROVIDES FAMILY COUNSELING SERVICES TO FAMILIES SEEKING SUPPORT OR NEEDING SPECIALIZED MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT. (C) THE CENTER CUSTOMIZES MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING BASED ON THE NEEDS OF INDIVIDUALS STRUGGLING WITH PERSONAL CRISES. THE GOAL OF THESE SERVICES IS TO ASSIST CLIENTS AND RESTORE BALANCE AND HARMONY WITHIN THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES. (D) THE CENTER OFFERS ADULT SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE OUTPATIENT TREATMENT SERVICES OR ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, AND OTHER SUBSTANCE ABUSE. THE PROGRAMS INCORPORATE INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING AND GROUP SUPPORT SERVICES TO HELP INDIVIDUALS DEVELOP POSITIVE COPING SKILLS AND THOUGHT PATTERNS. THE PROGRAM UTILIZED MODERN TECHNIQUES AND METHODS WHILE MAINTAINING RESPECT FOR THE CULTURAL VALUES AND TRADITIONS OF AMERICAN INDICANS AND ALASKA NATIVES.
EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE AND FOOD PROGRAMS - THE CENTER PROVIDES EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE TO AMERICAN INDIANS AND ALASKA NATIVES AND FOOD SUPPLIES TO LOW INCOME FAMILIES REGARDLESS OF ETHNICITY. (A) THE CENTER ASSISTS CLIENTS WITH PERSONAL AND FAMILY EMERGENCIES. (B) THE CENTER, IN COOPERATION WITH THE UTAH FOOD BANK AND UTAH DEPARTMENT OF WORKFORCE SERVICES, SUPPLIES FOOD TO LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES REGARDLESS OF ETHNICITY. THE PROGRAM INCLUDES ASSISTANCE IN THE SHORT-TERM (AN IMMEDIATE THREE-DAY FOOD SUPPLY) AND IN THE LONG-TERM (FOOD STAMP PROGRAM). THE CENTER STRIVES TO HELP CLIENTS WITH THEIR IMMEDIATE NEEDS AND HELP THEM ESTABLISH A PROGRESSION PLAN AND DEVELOP LONG-TERM SUPPORT STRATEGIES. THE FOOD STAMP PROGRAM PROVIDES LONGER TERM ASSISTANCE TO ADDRESS MULTIPLE NEEDS AND SEEKS TO ELIMINATE THE OCCURRENCE OF CRISES BY HELPING CLIENTS CONNECT WITH COMMUNITY SERVICE PROVIDERS. THESE CONNECTIONS HELP CLIENTS ADDRESS THEIR IMMEDIATE NEEDS AND SERVE AS A RESOURCE FOR THE FUTURE.
