THE MISSION OF WASATCH FORENSIC NURSES IS TO PROVIDE COMPASSIONATE CARE AND PROFESSIONAL TIMELY COLLECTION OF FORENSIC MEDICAL EVIDENCE AS PART OF A MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM.
WE COMPLETED OUR 18TH YEAR IN OPERATION IN 2019. THIS YEAR WE EXPERIENCED CONSIDERABLE GROWTH AND SUCCESS AS WE PROVIDE CARE TO ADOLESCENT AND ADULT VICTIMS ACROSS BOTH SALT LAKE AND UTAH, SUMMIT AND WASATCH COUNTIES. WITH LEADERSHIP FROM A FULL-TIME EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND A PART-TIME CLINICAL DIRECTOR, WE CONTINUED TO DEVELOP OUR ORGANIZATION WHILE CONTINUING TO FOCUS ON OUR MISSION OF PROVIDING OUTSTANDING TIMELY, COMPASSIONATE CARE TO OUR PATIENTS. FOR YET ANOTHER YEAR WE HAVE EXPERIENCED INCREASING REQUESTS FOR OUR SERVICES. THIS INCREASE REINFORCES THE NEED FOR NURSES TO BE ON-CALL AND AVAILABLE TO CARE FOR VICTIMS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE 24O-HOURS-A-DAY, 7-DAYS-A WEEK. IN 2019, WE PROVIDED CARE FOR 843 PATIENTS WHO REPORTED EXPERIENCING SEXUAL AND OR INTERPERSONAL VIOLENCE. THIS IS THE LARGEST NUMBER OF PATIENTS WE HAVE SERVED SINCE BEGINNING OUR PROGRAM IN 2001 AND A 11% GROWTH FROM 2018. OF THESE 659 PATIENTS WERE SEEN IN SALT LAKE COUNTY, 190 WERE PATIENTS SEEN IN UTAH COUNTY, 9 PATIENTS WERE SEEN IN SUMMIT COUNTY AND 3 PATIENTS WERE SEEN IN WASATCH COUNTY. WE ALSO PROVIDED FORENSIC EXAMINATIONS ON SUSPECTED PERPETRATORS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE AT THE REQUEST OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, AND PROVIDED EXPERT WITNESS TESTIMONY AT TRIALS AS CASES MOVE FORWARD IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. OUR RESPONSE HAS HELPED REDUCE THE LONG-TERM HEALTH CONSEQUENCES EXPERIENCED BY EACH OF THESE VICTIMS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE THROUGH TIMELY AND SENSITIVE CARE. OUR SERVICES ALSO REDUCE THE BURDEN EXPERIENCED BY EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT (ED) PERSONNEL BY PROVIDING OUR NURSES WITH THEIR SPECIALTY TRAINING TO RESPOND TO THE NEEDS OF THESE VICTIMS. THE AVAILABILITY OF OUR NURSES FOR DEDICATED CARE OF THESE PATIENTS ALLOWS THE ED PROVIDERS TO FOCUS ON OTHER PATIENTS WITH CRITICAL NEEDS. OUR SERVICES COULD NOT BE PROVIDED WITHOUT THE ASSISTANCE OF OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND FOUNDATIONS. WE IMPLEMENTED A STATEWIDE PRECEPTOR PROGRAM THAT BEGAN IN DECEMBER 2019. BECAUSE WE COVER SUCH A LARGE AREA OF THE STATE AND HAVE A HIGH VOLUME OF CASES, WE INVITE SANE NURSES FROM RURAL TEAMS TO TRAIN WITH OUR TEAM FOR 4 DAYS. THIS PROVIDES THE NURSES' INSIGHT AND EXPERIENCE THAT THEY CAN TAKE BACK TO THEIR TEAMS. WITHOUT THIS TRAINING, THEY WOULDN'T RECEIVE THE VOLUME OF CALLS IN THE AREAS THEY COVER. WHILE WE CONSIDER VICTIM HEALTH CARE SERVICES OUR MOST IMPORTANT MISSION, W ALSO ARE COMMITTED TO THE EDUCATION OF NURSES THROUGHOUT THE STATE. IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UTAH COALITION AGAINST SEXUAL ASSAULT AND WITH SUPPORT FROM A GRANT FROM THE UTAH OFFICE OF VICTIMS OF CRIME, WE PROVIDED TWO TRAININGS IN 2019 TO NURSES THROUGHOUT OUR STATE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN BECOMING SEXUAL ASSAULT NURSE EXAMINERS (SANES). OVER THE YEARS WE HAVE PROVIDED EDUCATION TO MORE THAN 800 NURSES. OUR NURSES ALSO PROVIDE SPECIALIZED EDUCATION FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT, HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS, DISTRICT ATTORNEYS, RAPE-RECOVERY ADVOCATES AND OTHER GROUPS IN OUR COMMUNITY.
