To use a relationship centered approach to promote, foster, create and support direct hands-on opportunities for people of all ages to reconnect to the natural world, and in doing so, foster a multi-generational community in the Chittenden County, dedicated to building relationships between the human and more than human ecosystems.
The Field School is a space where kiddos in grades 1-8 can immerse themselves in the creative expanse of the wild world. Our classroom consists of more than 100 acres of forest, meadow, shoreline, and marsh on land adjacent to Lake Champlain, in Burlington, VT. Our curriculum is emergent, based on the passions of the staff, the evolving interest of each kid, and the seasonal events unfolding under a canopy of maples and hickories. Each day brings new adventures and opportunities for learning and discovery.
We offer week long camps to kids in grades 1-5 and an embedded apprentice program for kids in grades 6-8. In the summer, each week offers two different themes for families to choose from. Camps include art, swimming, exploring, carving, primitive skills, archery, canoeing and more. We also offer vacation camps during February and April public school breaks.
In the SVC, we build on the model of the Field School by offering a complementary program for a cohort of middle schoolers. They work together to design personal learning objectives to learn a trade (ie: song writing, spoon carving, wild medicinal plants, etc.), explore Vermont in a series of field trip adventures, and take a leadership role in facilitating transformative and engaging experiences for younger kids.
