Organizations Filed Purposes: ENHANCE THE ECONOMIC VITALITY AND ECLECTIC MIX OF BURLINGTON, VERMONT'S ARTS AND BUSINESS COMMUNITY. PROMOTING THE UNIQUE BLEND OF ART, COMMERCE, INDUSTRY AND ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT; PROVIDING AN INFLUENTIAL VOICE TO PROMOTE AND ENSURE OUR MEMBERS' COMMON INTEREST; AND INFORMING OUR MEMBERS OF ISSUES THAT AFFECT OUR COMMUNITY AND ACTIONS WE TAKE ON ITS BEHALF.

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC DRAMATICALLY CHANGED THE STANDARD OPERATIONS OF THE SOUTH END ARTS & BUSINESS ASSOCIATION (SEABA) IN 2020. THE SMALL ARTS NON-PROFIT IS PREDOMINATELY SUSTAINED BY FUNDING RECEIVED THROUGH EVENT SPONSORSHIP AND EVENT REGISTRATIONS. THE TIMING OF THE PANDEMIC OCCURRED DURING A PERIOD WHEN CONTRACTS ARE SIGNED TO COVER THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH PLANNING AND HOSTING OF OF VERMONT'S LARGEST ART FESTIVAL, THE SOUTH END ART HOP. WITH THE UNCERTAINTY OF HOW OR EVEN IF THE EVENT COULD STILL TAKE PLACE, IT WAS DIFFICULT TO SECURE SPONSORSHIPS AND PLAN FOR ANY IN- PERSON ACTIVITIES. 2020 MARKED THE 28TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOUTH END ART HOP, WHICH ON A STANDARD YEAR WOULD GENERATE OVER 50% OF THE ANNUAL REVENUE THAT SUPPORTS THE ORGANIZATION. THE SEABA STAFF NEEDED TO COMPLETELY CHANGE GEARS IN ORDER TO CONTINUE PAYING PAYROLL, COVERING OVERHEAD AND TO REPRESENT THE SOUTH END AND GREATER BURLINGTON CREATIVE COMMUNITY. THE SEABA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR THEN TURNED ATTENTION TO SUCCESSFULLY WRITING GRANTS AND APPLYING FOR FEDERAL LOANS TO BRIDGE THE GAP IN FUNDING. WITH SUPPORT FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE SOUTH END ART HOP WOULD GO VIRTUAL, WITH AS MANY IN-PERSON ACTIVITIES THAT WOULD BE SAFE TO HOST IN SEPTEMBER. SEABA STAFF WERE THEN ABLE TO DO THE WORK TO PLAN AND EXECUTE A HYBRID EVENT THAT COULD BE PROMOTED TO SPONSORS AND WOULD ENCOURAGE ARTISTS TO PARTICIPATE. ONE PART TIME STAFF PERSON WAS HIRED TO FOCUS ON BUILDING A NEW WEBSITE AND ART SALES PLATFORM SO ARTISTS COULD THEN UPLOAD IMAGES OF WORK TO BE ENJOYED BY THE PUBLIC REMOTELY. ONLINE RESERVATIONS SITES WERE ESTABLISHED SO CURATED ART EXHIBITION LOCATIONS COULD BE VISITED IN PERSON USING STRICT COVID-19 GUIDELINES. INSTEAD OF LARGE KID'S HOP DAY WHERE FAMILIES GATHER TOGETHER TO WORK ON CREATIVE PROJECTS; A POP UP TENT WAS SET UP TO DO A SOCIALLY DISTANCED PICK UP OF GOODIE BAGS WITH ACTIVITES TO TAKE HOME. SEABA STARTED TWO NEW INITATIVES FOR ANNUAL PROGRAMMING IN 2020. AN ARTIST RESIDENCY SPONSORED BY UNSWORTH PROPERTIES, GIVES ONE ARTIST FULL USE OF A PRIVATE INDUSTRIAL STUDIO TO CREATE IN, RENT FREE FOR ONE YEAR, WHICH LAUNCHED IN AUGUST OF 2020. AN EVENING LIGHTING PROGRAM OUTSIDE LOCAL BUSINESSES CALLED THE GLOW UP KICKED OFF AT THE END OF 2020 TO EXTEND FOR THE FIRST TWO MONTHS OF 2021.
