The third program area is a large material donation that VCI is coordinating for two Cuban institutions. This donation was made by the Flora Family Foundation and consists of solar panels, electric motorbikes, communication materials, and laboratory equipment. The goal of this donation is to strengthen the material capacity of two Cuban institutions who are leaders in the movement of agroecology. VCI secured permissions from the US Dept of Commerce to export these items.

Cuba ProgramMost of our programming work for 2019 was part of our Cuba-US Agroecology Network, an initiative whose mission is to connect people, institutions and movements in Cuba and the US to build more ecologically resilient, socially just and economically fair farming systems. We do this by raising awareness about Cubas agroecology advances and challenges, facilitating partnerships and building capacity amongst stakeholders through exchanges, courses, conferences and workshops. In addition, we work to amplify Cuban voices internationally, and to channel resources and opportunities to our counterparts on the island. In 2019 we organized several exchanges including: sponsoring a farmer to farmer exchange with Caribbean countries; sponsoring farmer participation from the US and Puerto Rico in an encounter in Cuba; CUSAN experts spoke at various conferences in Cuba and the US.

Community Plan for Adaptation to Climate ChangeThe second program area is a project in eastern Cuba focused on community-based climate change adaptation planning. The objective of this program is to increase the adaptive capacity and resilience of five communities located within Cubas Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, and to assist them in the creation of a Community Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change.
