Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO SUPPORT ARTISTS AND WRITERS BY PROVIDING STUDIO RESIDENCIES IN AN INCLUSIVE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY, HONORING CREATIVE WORK AS THE COMMUNICATION OF SPIRIT THROUGH FORM.
In 2019, The Vermont Studio Center continued its fourth decade by providing more than 749 artists and writers with the invaluable combination of studio time and space, international community, optional artistic counsel, and the daily life along the Gihon River in Johnson, VT. Artists and writers came from 42 of the 50 states (plus Washington DC and Puerto Rico), and more than 30 countries. 239 of the participating residents received fellowships, while 419 received some form of financial assistance, for a total of 658 artists who received financial support. VSC broke ground on the third project of its Campus Master Plan (CMP), the Pearl House was taken off line in the early fall, closing 9 rooms used for housing with a plan for 13 individual bedrooms, 10 with their own bathrooms. Work began with the demolition of the Pearl Barn, formerly used as a shop and storage area. The barn was documented for historic preservation. This made it possible to create a layout of rooms within the historic original house with an addition. Overall, this project combines the historic stature of a landmark village home with the efficiencies, safety and accessibility of a modern building. In 2019, VSC celebrated its 35th anniversary with alumni and board events in Johnson, VT, in the spring. Fellowships from the 35 in 35 campaign started in 2018 were awarded in 2019 while additional fellowship monies were raised. When VSCs President, Gary Clark stepped down in June, 2019, VSCs board enlisted Ellen McCulloch-Lovell as the Interim Executive Director. Ellen brought broad experience in education, fundraising and non-profit management and steered the organization through 2019 while a full executive search was launched to lead VSC into its next decade. On-going work in diversity and inclusion training continued with the staff in efforts to make VSC a welcoming place for all residents, employees and volunteers. In its commitment to support the local community, the VSC School Art Program provided all the children in Johnson Elementary with weekly art instruction and cultural enrichment, an exhibit for the community that included work by every child, participated in afterschool programming as well as shared ideas and exhibitions with other art teachers in the district. More than 80 public events were hosted by VSC in its historic former opera house on Main Street, including artist talks, readings by national writers, and an open house for the town holiday event. The VSC kitchen spent nearly a third of its food budget on locally sourced agricultural products. In 2019, the Vermont Studio Center received 441 charitable contributions from individuals and foundations, ranging from $5 to $300,000, in support of all aspects of VSC community life. The endowment fund held $8,556,305 at the end of 2019.
