Organizations Filed Purposes:
To advocate for the right of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families to be regarded as valued citizens with the same entitlements as non-disabled individuals, including the right to lifelong opportunities for personal growth and full participation in the community.
1.We are "representative payee" for approximately 55 clients. We assist clients in managing within their budget limitations, allowing individuals to have food, shelter, clothing, and expense money throughout the month. 2.We contact case managers, social workers, guardian specialists regarding issues of concern both to and about clients. This is done to keep the client out of crisis. 3.We make arrangements for Social Security and SSI benefits for new clients. This allows the client to receive funds that would otherwise be withheld due to the lack of a payee.
4.We arrange dances, dinners and an annual Christmas party for a total of six (6) events held in the community each year. This helps with social development and the sense of belonging and physical fitness. 5.We promote self-advocacy for both adult individuals and families by acting as ally for the Self-Advocates Becoming Empowered-Rutland and by supporting the Rutland Family Support Network. In these gatherings individuals are able to gain a sense of accomplishment as they set and reach goals, go to conferences and work towards system changes by advocating for their needs. 6.We are the administrator and co-advisor to the Aktion Club of Rutland County, the individuals are able to gain a sense of leadership and pride as they give back to the community that has helped them. 7.Our Executive Director regularly attends conferences and meetings to advocate, educate, and learn about the Developmental System. These contacts reiterate and support what individuals and families are saying. She is also a: - Member of the Local Program Standing Committee & receives State Standing Committee minutes. - Member on the Rutland Family Support Network planning committee . - Member on the Bus 5311, Elderly & Disabled transportation grant consortium. - Member of the Rutland Regional Partnership of Family Services Community Board . 8.We provide a library of information for referral to other service providers and are an important link between them and individuals and families; they are helped by getting the information they need. 9.We have comprehensive mailing and e-mail lists that enable us to disseminate important information on current topics such as; legislative issues, trainings, meetings, conferences, events, other services provided by community, as well as our own events. Folks are receiving needed information.
