Special Olympics Vermont (SOVT) contributes to the physical, social and psychological development of individuals with intellectual disabilities primarily through athletic training and competitions. We provide a broad variety of programming to support holistic well-being, with a focus on year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

To accomplish its mission, Special Olympics Vermont: SOVT contributes to the physical, social, and psychological development of children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Through successful experiences in community engagement, personal wellness, and sports, our athletes gain confidence and build positive self-images, which follow them into their homes, classrooms, jobs and communities. Through the work of dedicated staff and over 3,000 generous volunteers annually, SOVT conducts a variety of activities in support of its mission. During 2019, significant program activities consisted of the following, providing training and education, athletic competitions, and various other resources to over 2,000 children and adult athletes with intellectual disabilities. ** Hosted year-round athletic events and competitions in 13 different Olympic-style sports, including 4 statewide competitions and various tournaments for local and school- based programs in Vermont. ** Supported 26 community-based and 78 school-based athletic programs, which train athletes and unified partners for participation in state, regional, national and worldwide athletic events. ** Continued to build inclusive school communities for individuals with intellectual disabilities through "Unified Champion Schools" programs and collaboration with Special Olympics Incorporated (SOI) and the U.S. Department of Education. ** Offered inclusive play-based programs for "Young Athletes" ages 2-7, to introduce young children to Special Olympics, inclusion, and to enhance physical and social development. ** Provided 700 free screenings in five disciplines: dentistry, physical therapy, optometry, audiology, and nutrition, to athletes through SOVT's "Healthy Athletes" program, in partnership with the Vermont Dental Society and health professional volunteers. ** Provided 6,665 fresh, healthy, and locally sourced meals to athletes and volunteers through the "Farm to Athlete" initiative. ** Organized activities to support the social well-being of athletes. ** Supported athletes as board and committee members, spokespeople, and advocates for the Special Olympics movement. ** Recruited and trained volunteers for participation in programming and fundraising events, including hundreds of coaches and health professionals.
