CRJC is committed to providing a safe environment for neighbors and parties to resolve conflict in our communities, to restore relationships, and to take responsibility to repair harms caused. We promote the principles of victim focused restorative justice in Caledonia and Southern Essex Counties, Vermont.
THE OFFENDER REENTRY PROGRAM ACCOUNTS FOR APPROXIMATELY 55% OF OUR PROGRAM ACTIVITY TIME AND IS FUNDED BY THE VERMONT LEGISLATURE THROUGH THE VERMONT DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS AND BY A SUB-GRANT FROM THE US DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE THROUGH THE VT DOC. THE PROGRAM IS STAFFED BY ONE FULL-TIME REENTRY COORDINATOR WHO WORKS WITH 20 VOLUNTEERS TO PROVIDE SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY REINTEGRATION. CIRCLES AND SUPPORT AND ACCOUNTABILITY (COSA) ARE THE PRIMARY SERVICE THAT IS COORDINATED BY THIS EMPLOYEE. VOLUNTEERS MEET WITH THE REENTRY CLIENT (CORE MEMBER)WEEKLY FOR ONE YEAR. THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN EVALUATED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT AND FOUND TO REDUCE RECIDIVISM BY AT LEAST 27%. THESE EFFORTS LESSEN THE BURDEN OF CORRECTION AND LAW ENFORCEMENT STAFF BY HOLDING THE CORE MEMBER ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS AND FOSTERING A MORE INTEGRATED COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE OF RECIPROCITY AND INVOLVEMENT. FY 16, WE WORKED WITH 37 PEOPLE THROUGH THIS REENTRY PROGRAM.
THE RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PANELS ACCOUNT FOR APPROXIMATELY 25% OF OUR PROGRAM ACTIVITY TIME, AND IS ENTIRELY FUNDED BY THE VERMONT LEGISLATURE THROUGH THE VERMOTN DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS. THE PROGRAM IS STAFFED BY A RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PANEL COORDINATOR WHO WORKS WITH 30 TRAINED CITIZEN VOLUNTEERS IN 6 PANELS OF 5 MEMBERS EACH. IN ADDITION, THERE ARE VOLUNTEERS AVAILABLE FOR MEDIATION, FAMILY GROUP CONFERENCES, CIRCLES, SCHOOL PROCESSES, AND OTHER RESTORATIVE CONFLICT RESOLUTION STRATEGIES WHICH
THE LEGAL PROGRAM ACCOUNTS FOR APPROXIMATELY 10% OF OUR PROGRAM ACTIVITY TIME AND IS FUNDED BY THE VERMONT BAR FOUNDATION THROUGH ITS IOLTA GRANT. THE PROGRAM IS STAFFED BY A PART TIME LEGAL PROGRAM COORDINATOR WHO COORDINATES 15 ATTORNEYS WHO OFFER THEIR SERVICES TO THIS FREE LEGAL CLINIC PRO BONO. THE ATTORNEYS ROTATE SO THAT THERE ARE 2 ATTORNEYS AT EACH CLINIC. CITIZENS FROM CALEDONIS COUNTY, ESSEX COUNTY, AND ORLEANS COUNTY ARE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CLINIC AT NO CHARGE, AND RECEIV
