CREATING HOMEOWNERSHIP FOR FAMILIES IN NEED: GREEN MOUNTAIN HABITAT FOR HUMANITY (GMHFH) MAKES HOMEOWNERSHIP POSSIBLE FOR FAMILIES WHO HAVE AN ANNUAL HOUSEHOLD INCOME OF 80% OR BELOW OF THE MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME; WHO LIVE IN SUBSTANDARD RENTAL HOUSING; OR WHO DON'T QUALIFY FOR A CONVENTIONAL MORTGAGE ON A MARKET RATE HOME. FAMILIES THAT ARE WILLING TO PARTNER WITH US CONTRIBUTE 400 HOURS OF SWEAT EQUITY HELPING TO BUILD THEIR HOME. IN ORDER TO HELP THE "PARTNER FAMILIES" BE SUCCESSFUL AS HOMEOWNERS, GMHFH REQUIRES THAT THE FAMILIES ATTEND FINANCIAL TRAINING WORKSHOPS AS WELL AS HOME MAINTENANCE TRAINING. GMHFH HAS ONLY HAD THREE FORECLOSURES SINCE 1984 WHICH, GIVEN THE INCOME LEVEL OF "PAYCHECK TO PAYCHECK", IS REMARKABLE AND SPEAKS TO THE CARE TAKEN WHEN SELECTING FAMILIES AND THE SUPPORT GIVEN TO THEM THROUGH THE HOMEBUILDING PROCESS AND BEYOND. GMHFH ALSO HAS TWO ALL-VOLUNTEER CHAPTERS, ONE IN FRANKLIN & GRAND ISLE COUNTIES AND ONE IN LAMOILLE COUNTY. THE CHAPTERS ARE RESPONSIBLE
GREEN MOUNTAIN HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILDS PERPETUALLY AFFORDABLE HOMES AND SELLS THEM AT COST TO LOW-INCOME WORKING FAMILIES IN CHITTENDEN COUNTY, VERMONT, AND OPERATES THE GMHFH RESTORES.
GREEN MOUNTAIN HABITAT FOR HUMANITY (GMHFH) HAS BUILT SIMPLE, DECENT AND PERPETUALLY AFFORDABLE HOMES FOR WORKING LOW-INCOME FAMILIES IN CHITTENDEN COUNTY, VERMONT SINCE 1984. GMHFH HELPS FAMILIES WHO CURRENTLY LIVE IN SUBSTANDARD AND UNSAFE CONDITIONS AND HAVE NO POSSIBILITY OF OBTAINING A HOME THROUGH CONVENTIONAL MEANS. IN ADDITION, THE HABITAT RESTORE HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR THOUSANDS OF LOCAL FAMILIES STARTING OUT TO FURNISH THEIR HOMES AT PRICES THAT ALLOWED THEM TO STAY OUT OF DEBT. THIS YEAR MANY FAMILIES WERE IMPACTED BY THE WORK OF GMHFH. THESE AFFORDABLE HOMEOWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES WILL PROVIDE SHELTER AND STABILITY AS WELL AS HELP FAMILIES MOVE OUT OF POVERTY, AND AT THE SAME TIME ARE NOW BUILDING CAPITAL. SEVENTY-SEVEN HOMES HAVE BEEN BUILT BY GMHFH, AND EACH YEAR BETWEEN 400 AND 1,500 VOLUNTEERS TURN OUT TO LEND A HAND TO THESE LOCAL FAMILIES IN NEED.
GREEN MOUNTAIN HABITAT FOR HUMANITY RESTORE SELLS AND ACCEPTS GENTLY USED OR NEW FURNITURE, BUILDING MATERIALS, CABINETS, HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND APPLIANCES AND USES THE FUNDS TO HELP BUILD HABITAT HOMES IN CHITTENDEN COUNTRY. THESE HOMES MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR LOW-INCOME WORKING FAMILIES IN OUR COMMUNITY TO LEAVE SUBSTANDARD RENTAL HOUSING BEHIND AND TO GET A HAND-UP TO A BETTER LIFE.
