The Lindbergh Foundation's mission is to support aviation-oriented projects that use technology to benefit the environment and to acknowledge those individuals who make significant contributions to balancing technology and environment.
Air Shepherd Initiative - The Foundation has developed and initiated a major campaign to raise public awareness to help stop the poaching of elephants and rhinos in Africa, funding the acquisition of a number of drone aircraft. The Air Shepherd Initiative program is helping provide support for pilot training programs and equipment for Southern Africa, which strives to protect elephants, rhinos and other wildlife in Africa's national parks against poaching and other threats. The initiative is a partnership with multiple organizations and governmental entities. The drones are flying in South Africa, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. In addition to the above-mentioned campaign, the Foundation has solicited contributions for the Initiative which unspent funds are included in temporarily restricted net assets. Effective 2016, the Foundation contracted with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to help manage $1M of WWF funds to perform similar work in the countries of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi. The Foundation has partnered with separate organizations or the government in each location.
