Organizations Filed Purposes:
Develop regional foodsheed build connections among those foodshed by growing food farm business, promoting access to local food, sharing resouces, changing agricultural policy, mapping connecting the local food sector telling WVs food and farm story.
To improve the viability of the local food sector statewide by building and supporting a statewide network of those involved in West Virginias food economies.
The Coalitions Food Equity projects grew during 2019. The SNAP Stretch program, which doubles and triples EBT/SNAP formerly food stamps expended 53,000 in stretch dollars while capturing 35,000 in federal food assistance dollars for in our local food/agriculture economy. Additionally, the Coalition embarked upon a new project, the Rural Grocer Network, which provided funding for technical assistance, supplies, equipment, and inventory to assist three rural grocer retailers get started
Foodshed development is a program that places staff members as human resources in regions known as foodsheds. The Coalition placed five new human resources that serve 17 of 55 West Virginia counties. This program helps farmers and food entrepreneurs connect to training, techinal resources, financial resources, and to each other. As producers have connected to each other theyve come together to solve problems in the foodshed and work collectively to futher their own business endeavors.
The placemaking program connect food, agriculture, and Appalachian culture together through a series of events that engage tourists and community members through meals that are prepared by Chefs and food grown by West Virginia Producers. Each dish in the farm-to-table meal has an Appalachian story that is associated with the dish and is told by the chef. Funds from these dinners are returned to the chef, farmers, and community at large. During the 2019 season eight dinners were hosted.
